Mike Maignan #16 of AC Milan

Tuttosport: Maignan’s opening demands suggest tricky renewal talks for Milan

One of the missions that the AC Milan management have while the transfer window is closed is to try and secure contract renewals for those considered pillars of the future.

Today’s edition of Tuttosport (via PianetaMilan) talks about this specifically and in particular the situation surrounding Mike Maignan, who has established himself as a leader of the team and one of the best in the world in his position.

The French goalkeeper is considered a fundamental piece of the squad by the management and the staff. His contract expires on 30 June 2026 and the agreement signed in 2021 provides for a salary of €2.8m net per year.

Maignan has a base demand of around €8m per year to extend, which has been communicated through his agents. It is a high amount, which would exceed the top earner at present which is Rafael Leao with his €7m net (including bonuses).

Given that the former Lille man is one of the top goalkeepers in the world and could easily earn a high salary at a Premier League club for example, it will be an interesting negotiation to follow.

    1. Lmao sell one of the top 3 GK in the world and replace him with whom? There’s not many GK like Mike who have accurate long pass and great reflects. So selling him would be a big blow for Milan defense.

  1. I would have already sold him last summer and got Vicario. He has had too many injuries for 8M a season, or even 6. Missed 40 games in 4 different injuries. He can be as good as he wants but when you need a 2nd goalkeeper to cover that much, not worth it. Take the money, 80ish millions could be nice money to get a striker like Šeško and replace the goalkeeper.

    1. Fully agree.

When Tonali was sold, I said the same thing but many disagree with my opinion… which was fair.

One of the best GK in the world right now, maybe top 3/5. But injured way too often.

Imo offer 5-6m salary and add around €80-100m clause, which is fair price. With that money plus our transfer funds next summer we can buy Sesko/Gimenez and new main GK (around 20-30m is fine – I mean Livakovic cost way less, Vicario is that price and Raya will cost Arsenal 27m if they buy him). My preference actually someone Italian – Meret/Provedel, or buy good young keeper like Carnesecchi.

      1. Why would the offer him more to add a clause? What is the point if you will sell the player? He has a contract until 2026, it is unnecessary if Chelsea will come for him in the summer, or PSG.

    1. No club benefits from release clauses? Why not? Because they cannot ask for more because the clause will trigger the sale – whether the owner club wants it or not. Without the clause they can ask for the moon from the sky and doesn’t have to accept anything less.

    1. Sportiello and Mike is not even the same type of GK. Not just that, Mike is 3 years younger than Sportiello and in his prime time. Selling Mike is a stupid idea.
