Tuttosport: Milan line up U20 World Cup star as potential Gabbia replacement

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan could sign a centre-back from Spain to replace Matteo Gabbia as he has admirers in Serie A, according to a report.

This morning’s edition of Tuttosport (via SempreMilan.it) reports that the management are focusing more on the midfield and attack at the moment, but they are keeping an eye on centre-back options.

It seems that Facundo Gonzalez is on their list too. The Uruguayan central defender is 20 years of age and has an Italian passport, which means he would not take up a non-EU spot.

The paper claims that Milan are expected to officially ask for information about the central defender of Valencia Mestella in the next few days, which is their development squad that play in the Spanish second tier.

Gonzalez’s arrival would be preparatory to replacing Matteo Gabbia numerically, who is destined to leave Milan this summer and is attracting interest from the newly-promoted duo Genoa and Frosinone.

He played 17 games for Valencia’s B-team last season and was a part of the Uruguayan side that won the 2023 FIFA U20 World Cup in Argentina.

    1. Because he’s Italian. The management absolutely HATES Italians. But I guess it’s what the Calcio wants too… Growth Decree etc. Not that their national team is World Cup material either these days.

Still… It would be nice to have Italians – and especially own academy players – in the team. Even nicer would be having those in the starting 11 too. And not just for being “own” players but actually being world-class players. 😛

      1. Totally agree with this. I’m all for world class non Italians joining but when it’s some unknown u20 foreign player why are we targeting them and wasting a chance for our own Italian youth. I was comparing our lineup to inter who now have darmian bastoni acerbò barella fratessi and di marco and it’s embarrassing for an Italian team like ac Milan. No identity.

        1. Indeed. I used to make fun of Inter a decade (or so) ago when they had “all-foreign” team with maybe 1-2 Italian starters. How the tables have turned… Embarrassing is the right word here for sure.

    2. It’s about keeping the churn going.

Being Italian doesn’t help but the key is to keep moving players around as someone is getting a cut each time.

How many businesses change 25% of their workforce every year?

  1. Inters bastoni is in the same level with gabbia but because of the amount of time playing time he get at inter he is now far to our GABBIA❤️🖤

  2. They do know that we need italians in the squad to have more players in the champions league list. Yes we got Sportiello, but we have removed Tonali. Removing Gabbia now would mean having one less player in the champions league squad. Hopefully Theo’s substitute would be Italian and I would add Baldanzi now as the CAM and put Pulisic on the RW. At this rate the only Italian in the starting X1 will be Calabria.

  3. Current homegrown at 1st team:
    Sportiello (association)
    Mirante (association)
    Gabbia (club)
    Calabria (club)
    Florenzi (association)
    Pobega (club)
    Colombo (club)

    Is there anymore?

    1. Nope.
And looks like Gabbia, and potentially Clalabria, Pobega, and Colombo are also on the way out.
I do hope that they are not stupid enough to overlook this and having to register max of 21 players in the CL, with only 18 outfield players – and that is considering they manage to fill the nation trained quota – which is highly unlikely considering the transfer movements.

They might just be stupid enough though, and then make a faceplam when registering the squad.

      1. Don’t bother about those stupid rumours. Those rumour are designed by those so called journalist to generate another rumours about incoming transfer. Otherwise, they’ll run out of story.

  4. Why? 😀 What is the point of getting a kid that didn’t play a serious match in his life to be a backup? What will he do exactly?

  5. Sogn him at this Moment he will be the best cemtral Deffender in the world in he is given chance to line up.
    Sell Tomori and Kjear
He is currentlly better than All our Current Central Deffemderss

    1. We’re now at the point that the one thing Italians do better than anyone else, defending, is not even credited to them.
