Tuttosport: Milan’s ratings after second Champions League defeat – Average at best

After being defeated by Bayer Leverkusen, AC Milan players have been rated for their performances, and for the majority of the squad, it is not a good look…

Tuesday’s defeat is not calamitous like the loss to Liverpool, mainly due to context. Before the defeat against Arne Slot’s side, Milan had won just once – a 4-0 victory against Venezia – whereas now, they have recorded consecutive victories in the league.

With that being said, though, this does not serve as a get-out-of-jail card, and the Rossoneri must look at themselves after a second defeat in the Champions League – which due to the new format, is not damning.

Of course, we can look to poor officiating as a reason for the defeat, but multiple players also fell short according to the ratings from Tuttosport (via Pianeta Milan).

Starting with the coach, Paulo Fonseca was given a 5/10 – he tried to ‘tighten the wings for density’ but Leverkusen took advantage of this, causing the head coach to ‘never seem in control’.

The Diavolo can look to Youssouf Fofana for the best performance of the game, and his ‘personality and initiative’ were not enough to drag his teammates on, often seeming isolated, but not due to his own efforts – he gets a 7. Mike Maignan then claims a 6.5 for some nice saves, but his ‘capitulation in the long run’ affects his score.

Following the French duo, Fikayo Tomori, Christian Pulisic, Tijjani Reijnders and Tammy Abraham all earn a score of six – alongside substitute Alvaro Morata – for average performances with moments of something.

Matteo Gabbia, Theo Hernandez and Ruben Loftus-Cheek follow next, each earning a 5.5, whereas Rafael Leao and Emerson Royal claim a five – with the former being ‘too little’ for the Rossoneri. Certainly a frustrating night all round.

    1. Agree, Dave. The ratings generated on this site seem to have a bias. I also look at Cult of Calcio. Too many people make ratings it seems from only watching the ball.

  1. In my opinion Milan has to fight like a Lion to reach the Champions leaque next Season! International it is Not enough and in Italy it will be a strong Battle!
