Tuttosport: Millions and Pioli’s future at stake – Milan reach crossroads in Newcastle

By Oliver Fisher -

The most important night of AC Milan’s season has arrived, and they are hoping for a miracle to reach the Champions League round of 16.

Tuttosport (via MilanNews) writes how fate is not only in the hands of Milan, who must beat Newcastle at all costs but must also hope for Borussia Dortmund to win at home against Paris Saint-Germain.

Milan are at a crossroads: to stay in Europe they must win at St. James’ Park (with a win against the Premier League side they would be certain of at least a place in the Europa League), otherwise they will be out entirely and at that point Stefano Pioli’s position could also come back into question.

Despite the coach having been confirmed on several occasions in recent months by the owners, reflections would be forced. It remains true that Milan do not want to change coaches mid-season and are aiming to get through at least until the end of the season with Pioli, but a bad defeat tonight could change everything.

The Rossoneri management and owners are therefore hoping for a positive result, also because staying in Europe – especially in the Champions League – would be very important not only from a sporting point of view, but also from an economic point of view.

Getting to the round of 16 would then allow Milan to still hope to qualify for the 2025 Club World Cup, a 32-team tournament that will be played in the USA and which would bring at least another €50m.

  1. For the good of the club we need to lose, so that Pioli is sacked, and we begin to plan for the future, we can still have a good season, with a powerful ending if we get rid of him, he has nothing to offer any more.. ….with him I don’t even think we could qualify for the UCL…

  2. the management will have a reality check today and despite following this team since 2001, i have never had a bad time as much as i do for this inept management in their choice of leadership…..this can only be compared to the LI, mirabelli era in terms of waste and bad choice in recruitments…..even though this current leadership were motivated by envy, ignorance and living in a world of fantansy and jealous of the power of presence PAOLO MALDINI commanded and the maldini dynasty heritage! now there envy is about to land them in failure to achieve set goals and objectives… now your money ball ideology will come to your rescue tonight.

    1. Hit the nail on the head. It was really about envy. Gerry wanted this to be his Milan and Maldini was in the way, being clearly more loved and adore by not just us fans but neutrals and footballing afficionados. They made their own imprint over the summer and were way in over their heads. I’m sure he thought it would have shown people “how it’s done”. Instead it exposed their flaws and lack of footballing knowledge.
