Alessandro Buongiorno

Tuttosport: Milan could sell centre-back to fund €45m move for Buongiorno

AC Milan are not just looking to reinforce the attack this summer, with the imminent arrival of a No.9, but also the defensive department. Alessandro Buongiorno is the main target but his price tag is rather hefty, a report claims.

Milan have conceded way too many goals this season, most recently letting in three against Genoa, and something needs to change for next season. In addition to a new manager, the Rossoneri could also reinforce the defensive department.

According to today’s edition of Tuttosport (via MilanNews), Torino star Buongiorno is the primary target for the defence and he has been on Milan’s wish list for a long time. However, the likes of Inter, Juventus and Napoli are also following the Italian closely.

In January, Milan made an attempt to sign him but were quickly shot down by both Torino and Buongiorno, who didn’t want to part ways in the middle of the season. Now, however, the player is ready to make the big leap and the Rossoneri are plotting a new move.

Inter remain a likely destination, though only if Torino can accept a loan with an obligation to buy, while Milan also have room for some investments this summer. President Urbano Cairo is bound to ask for around €45m, now willing to sell the centre-back, and this is clearly a high figure.

Milan will make a huge investment up front, with Benjamin Sesko a key target, so they would have to make some calculations at the back. To fund a move for Buongiorno, they would likely have to sell either Fikayo Tomori (€30m price tag) or Malick Thiaw (€20m) this summer.

Counterparts are also possible, with the likes of Tommaso Pobega and Lorenz Colombo having been mentioned before.

  1. You cannot use “or” in here, as replacing Tomori is would not be an upgrade.

If a defender is sold — it has to be the dimwit Thiaw.

    1. Thiaw is young, he just hasn’t fully regained match fitness. His price will rise. Tomori has however regressed and reached his peak. It would be the best option to let him go now, his value isn’t going to rise. 30m would be a lot for Tomori. Even though Southgate is an idiot, it was on display for everyone why he doesn’t pick him this season and last season. Do you think Ancelotti wants Thaiw because he’s a dimwit? There’s a very good defender in there.

      1. I think Tomori would be sold by the management fir the right price, I just don’t believe it would be €30mn. Rumors that Bayern are keen and likely would find buyers in the EPL but I would imagine closer to €50mn would be asked for.

I guess no more suggestions that we are looking at Scalvini? He’d likely cost in that region too.

      2. Is that a joke? 30M a lot for Tomori? 50M minimum.. just his value on transfermarkt is 40M and you’d settle for 30? The fùuuuuuuuuuuucckk?

    2. dimwit comment…. No long-term outlook?

Thiaw has more potential than Tomori given his age and can grow and improve beyond anything Tomori is capable of.

  2. That would be a very big mistake, a club that wants to win has to keep it’s best players intact, Thaiw and Tomori are very good players, they just need consistency and a reliable Coach, the way deals are structured now, we could get him without selling anyone, we just need to spread the payments, both of them will be fundamental for the future, we cannot continue to chop and change, Kjear is going, Florenzi should be released, that would lighten our wage bill for him.
I am being serious, before you get a defender with Thaiw’s build, speed and technical quality, you have to be very lucky, he just needs consistency and a Coach that believes in him….he is young , fast, technical and humble…..we cannot continue to make mistakes of releasing young players, just look at CDK and Alexis….

    1. Spot on. Just don’t get how people are to quick to want to sell a 22 y old German international. More than half the players in top football did have some struggles especially at young age and in the case of this Milan were players having to rely on individually skills and knowledge in a confused tactical setup. Aside Pulisic and Gabbia Imo, tell me which of our players didn’t have such struggles this season? Must the whole squad be sold then instead of at least trying to keep the ones with good potentials. We’ve seen in the Scudetto winning season that these defenders can defend when the whole team moves together in attack and defense. They shouldn’t get worse with more experience but Pioli started to get predictable and got figured out. You need a tactical change, not a new defense. And if must add a defender because Kalulu can’t stay fit then Calafiori would do at 20-25 mil not double of that for Buongiorno even tho he’s good.

  3. Tomori can even be tried as a right back, he is fast, aggressive and good on the ball…he played in England as a right back in certain matches, if a defender needs to be sacrificed, Theo should be the one, he is selfish, arrogant, petulant, and his technical, tactical ability and awareness is poor, he goes on solo runs and hardly passes to his team mates, we could get good money for him….and the option to sell him should only arise if we have a replacement for him, he asks to leave , or the new coach sanctions it.
Pioli should have worked on Theo’s mentality and movement and attitude…,

  4. what’s the good thing to be profitable club if we still selling our best players to fund purchase,
sell the dead weigh 1st or subtitute/ rotation players b4 our core

  5. lol Tomori is worth around 50-60, not 30 mln. Thiaw around 40 mln. For Tomori one can easily find a good buyer because he is seen as a very interesting option in the EPL.

  6. I’d rather have us go for Calafiori. He is a much better fit for Milan’s style of play. And also left-footed which we desperately are missing!

  7. Tomori was probably worth 50 million last year, not now. He has made so many mistakes this year, conceived so many goals and lost a lot of points. I would sell it for 30 million if somebody wants him.

    1. After his performances this year, nobody would pay 30M, be lucky to get 15 for Tomori. The same situation as Leao, sell when the price is highest, don’t wait until their value drops. Milan should have probably sold them both last year and would have if they knew how poorly they were going to play this season. Nobody wants to sell their stars, but it is a business. Buy low, sell high and don’t let emotion get in the way. Also be realistic, Tomori 50M is a joke. Just because they play for the team you like doesn’t make a player more available than what they are actually worth.

  8. Why are wasting any time thinking about CBs?

We need to focus on a DM and if we have left over cash a CF and if we have left over cash an AM.

It’ll be difficult to fill those roles with quality as it is without wasting time, money and effort on a CB.

    Can please have some focus.

  9. I don’t understand selling one CB to get another one. Isn’t the point to add quality? Kjaer leaves, Tomori is sold so Buongiorno can come in?

Buongiorno needs to come in and play alongside Tomori and Thiaw. THen the following season, you can attempt to upgrade on Tomori.

    1. We do have many CBs, and actually given the fact that even Theo, Terraciano and Kalulu can play in this position, we pretty much can make a lineup entierly made of CBs. I think it makes sense to offload some in order to accomodate for a new one, if of course we consider purchasing a CB to be a priority which I don’t necessarly agree with.
I won’t sell Tomori, or at least not this season unless we get a ridiculous offer from him (and by ridiculous I mean a good enough offer to purchase 2 quality players). I won’t also sell Gabbia. Thiaw is a bit of a headache for me, I do see him improving and haven’t given up on him but I can’t really turn down an offer around 30M for him, even if he supposedly will turn into a 60M defender.

  10. Is Buongiorno better than Tomori? Playing at Torino is not the same as playing at Milan. Tomori is our best defender, regardless of the errors he makes. How many errors has Theo made this season. As long as you are at the back, or in goal, you are bound to make errors. I will not judge Buongiorno by what he does at Torino, and, I doubt if Milan can afford him.

    1. Thank you. People talking of selling to ori, and speaking like this season alone is his only one.
And he has not been awesome for Milan. Bar Gabbia, Tomori is our best defender but okay. We are all watching this show together.

    2. I’d rather we go for the younger and bigger Scalvini but maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about.
Selling Tomori should be out of question unless a ridiculous offer comes in.
