Tuttosport: San Donato citizens request referendum over Milan stadium – the latest

By Isak Möller -

Citizens of San Donato have handed in an official referendum request to the city council, worried about AC Milan’s stadium plans in the San Francesco area. However, the mayor Francesco Squeri has played down the impact of this.

Milan’s stadium project recently entered a new phase not only because the club bought the San Francesco area for €40m, but also because the technical committee of the council approved the project. Naturally, however, not all reactions to this have been positive.

As reported by Tuttosport (via MilanNews), 120 citizens have signed the request for a consultative referendum. However, the mayor Francesco Squeri had already made it clear from the start that the public would be consulted on the matter.

“We are faced with a very important decision and it’s only right that the population can express itself. It’s no coincidence, however, that among the signatories of the referendum request, there are also citizens who have not yet matured a clear position, in favour or not, of the stadium,” he stated.

Milan remain very confident especially after the support of the council arrived. We wrote about the matter at length on our Substack ‘SempreMilan Insider‘, highlighting the three key takeaways from the recent developments. Indeed, there are reasons for the Rossoneri fans to be optimistic despite (expected) opposition.
