Tuttosport: Thiaw suffers ‘relapse’ after derby disaster with another naive error

By Oliver Fisher -

It was another night to forget for Malick Thiaw last night during the defeat against Juventus, or rather 40 minutes given his outing was cut short.

Tuttosport (via MilanNews) writes how after the 5-1 derby loss against Inter, Thiaw was the protagonist of another serious mistake against Juventus last night as the German centre-back committed a last-man foul after being spun by Moise Kean.

He was consequently sent off by referee the Maurizio Mariani and it was a red card that heavily influenced the game. Milan ultimately left the pitch with no points following Manuel Locatelli’s deflected shot in the second half, which would be the winner.

Up until that moment Milan were controlling the match without risking anything, but clearly that episode changed everything and from there a new match began.

For Thiaw, unfortunately, this is a ‘relapse’ given that he had made a similar mistake in the derby. In that case, from his mistake on Thuram, the Nerazzurri scored and took the lead after a few minutes.

Last night he made another grave error once again due to marking. The German was surprised by Kean, who he pushed up on instead of dropping off but did little to stop him flicking the ball and spinning.

At that point, the Rossoneri centre-back was forced to haul him down with a foul and hence the correct decision came from Mariani.

    1. @Agus. Being Young is no longer an excuse. He made the same mistake twice and it cost us 6 points.

Thaiw needs wake up and stop making silly mistakes that’s costing the team. Both Thiaw and Tomori needs to know when to press a player and when contain a player.

He didn’t need to press Keane in that moment.

Milan management needs to invest in an experienced CB under age 30 come January and send Thiaw to the bench.

He was reckless the entire match. Pioli should have started Kjaer instead for these big games

  1. This is nonsense to put everything on fault to Malic Thiaw.
Even Pioli said that full back wasn’t on his position.

So Thiaw did good decision. Who couldn’t know and see if he was last defender.

Defence is playing collective and not single players like everybody thinks.

  2. This is the kind of media reports that create a crisis out of nothing. Apart from the fact that he’s still young, and the fact that this was one of two bad games he had (so this whole relapse business is nonsense), we need to consider how Pioli utilizes the player.
Thiaw’s is certainly not slow in terms of speed and pace, but his “take off” is (because of his size). He found himself in the same position against Moise Kean as he did against Marcus Thuram in Inter’s second goal. Not to mention that the full back and the other center back who were supposed to support him were no where to be found.
This type of high lone with no back up just doesn’t suit Malick Thaiw. Every team with a player who has the same qualities as Thuram and Kean will put Thiaw in front of the same two choices.. 1) Make a foul and receive a card. 2) Give the other team a scoring chance.

    This is on Pioli. Period.
