Watch: How Milan’s off-ball movement created space against Torino

By Oliver Fisher -

There was yet more evidence on display during Saturday’s win against Torino that Stefano Pioli is using inverted full-backs to add an extra attacking threat.

We explained the concept of inverted full-backs and how Pioli has used them previously during a recent feature, and it is no surprise to see the frequency that Theo Hernandez and Davide Calabria push infield actually increase.

During the Torino win, we saw Theo in particular dart inside which drew men out of the Granata’s compact block – baiting them out as Pioli put it – while also freeing space for the two mezzali.

  1. People who hate Krunic and complaining about Leao doesn’t have any braincell to understand ‘off the ball movement’ and ‘creating space’. They only understand goals and assist.

    1. These are the kinds of things that don’t get picked up in the stats. Krunic is very good at reading situations and where he needs to be in order to allow the others to perform the fluid attack that everyone’s been enjoying now. He’s a CB, left back, Right back, CAM and mezzala when he needs to be. Notice he also moves up the pitch to cover the counter attacks in case we get dispossessed.

  2. Some people doesn’t really know hidden quantities about players, they only sees their lapses, thanks to pioli for the great job .

  3. yeah the players likely come into the games with plan a, b, c ideas, this is pioli playing the opponent. he has some basic principles (do what pep does), but how they get executed is changing from team to team so they can’t be scouted too heavily.

Pioli was close enough he could have called for that actually. Krunic recognizing the trigger to go wide is impressive.
