Watch: Maldini, Kaka, Zlatan – Theo Hernandez picks all-time AC Milan XI

By Oliver Fisher -

Theo Hernandez has picked his all-time AC Milan XI in a video shared by BR Football, and it would be fair to say he wants a team that scores a lot of goals.

Starting with the goalkeeper, Theo went with Dida over Gianluigi Donnarumma and Mike Maignan who he has played with, then he named himself in a three-man defence with Cafu and Paolo Maldini.

Then, he went for a double pivot of Andrea Pirlo and Gennaro Gattuso in front of the three defenders, a pair often used together under Carlo Ancelotti, with Ballon d’Or winners Kaka and Ronaldinho ahead of them.

The front three is Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Andriy Shevchenko and Marco van Basten, so it seems that the Frenchman is intent on outscoring opponents rather than going for 1-0s.

Theo’s best Milan XI (3-2-2-3): Dida; Cafu, Maldini, Theo; Pirlo, Gattuso; Kaka, Ronaldinho; Van Basten, Ibrahimovic, Shevchenko.

  1. Theo is a world class player on the day but I cant say that i especially likes that he puts himself in the best XI but not adding Baresi there as well.
He will get some street credit for omitting Donnarumma though 😀

      1. Yeah i get that but he didn’t see Van Basten either.
In the end its pretty damn impossible to make an all time best AC Milan XI as there is also a lot of players that i never saw either like Gianni Rivera or Gunnar Nordahl who also deserves a consideration.

          1. For me AC Milan will always be the greatest team in the world as well but its always debatable as things currently stands and Madrid has had its share of amazing players both now and 70 years ago like di Stéfano and Puskas who also would have been considered for our XI.
Nevertheless Milan is Milan and di stefano should never have played in Madrid to begin with as he had basically decided to sign for Barcelona but then Franco put an end to that move if I remember correctly.

        1. Yes mate you’re right, Madrid is shrouded with controversy, like you say, the Franco effect, and also had it not been for Munich, it’s pretty widely regarded that Man Utd would have had a few European cups off of them. Then they did nothing until 97, then the ridiculous selling the training ground saga and getting it back for free so they could buy the first lot of galacticos.

Milan is just a class club throughout….it’s not just about how many pots you manage to win (by cynically taking out Mo Salah) or by getting outplayed like in last Seasons CL multiple times. When Milan win, we win well…and are undisputedly the best

The next nearest for me is Liverpool. Remember in 89 when the Milan fans sang ‘ you’ll never walk alone’ at San Siro the day after Hillsborough….pure class. One of my old uni lecturers was a proper scouser ardent Liverpool fan and he lived in Milan for a while in the 90s…he said the bond between the two clubs was strong.

I just don’t like Madrid….funded by state royalty and the poster boys of uefa

          1. Yeah the Munich air plane crash certainly could have changed some things but the same can be said about the Torino air crash that wiped out their dominant Serie A team in 47 or something. Had that not happened who knows if they had been dominating Serie A for the next decade. 99 final though that utd won CL 🙂

Winning is always the most important as I see it but i definitely prefer winning with style.

Yeah that is a class act and even if I never have looked at Liverpool the same after 05 I will always consider that song very beautiful and emotional but Its the first year i started supporting the club so it its a bit hazy even though ive reseen it later on.

Well nowadays I like them even less because they has made a huge leap in cl wins, but yeah Franco certainly helped them a lot in the fifties and 60ies. One of the greates football experiences I’ve personally has had watching a match non related to AC Milan was when Danish team Odense boldklub beat them at Bernabeu 2-1 in 95 or something and send them out of the UEFA Cup 😀

  2. I can understand where Theo is coming from but when it comes to an All Time Milan XI:
    GK: Sebastiano Rossi
    CB: Baresi
    CB: Maldini
    CB: Nesta
    CM: Albertini
    CM: Pirlo
    CM: Rijkaard
    RWB: Cafu
    LWB: Serginho
    SS: Gullit
    ST: Van Basten

    1. It’s good but I feel like Sheva and Kaka should be there. There are so many great players someone will be left out either way though.

  3. My pick, based on a 4-4-2 formation:

    Rossi

    Tassoti
    Maldini
    Baresi
    Schnellinger

    Pirlo
    Rijkaard
    Rivera
    Savicevic

    Shevchenko
    Van Basten

  4. Funny how us fans pick Rossi over Dida but the players always pick the Disaster Artist. Great picks guys – I’d of course have Savicevic in there and probably Donadoni too but there’s too many 🖤❤️.

    1. Rossi will also always be my favorite and Savicevic certainly also deserves consideration. I adored Donadoni back in the days as well.

      1. You can’t argue with 929 minutes without conceding, most clean sheets in a season and fewest goals conceded. Plus he was part of the 58 match run. Excellent penalty saver too, saved us a few times in the 92-93 season, notably against Juve. I always felt a bit sorry for him, from an era of Zenga, Pagliuca, Marchegiani and Bucci…then along came Buffon

        1. Yeah fully remember that then unfortunately Buffon managed to ruin that record 20 years later but also in a much weaker league. He was great at making some spectacular saves sometimes as well, Yeah it was a tough competition as he never got an italy international match and i also felt really bad for him for that he towards the end with us got crushed by expectations to some extent. My all time favorite goalkeeper with Schmeichel and Chillavert.

          1. Ah Chillavert, I always wanted us to sign him…scored from like the half way line 😁😁

Buffon is the best of all time for me…despite being a zebra 😂

          2. Same here but I loved Rossi so I was also fine with what we had 🙂 Chillavert scored like 60 goals in his career or something, also a mad man from time to time though 😀

Yeah probably is but Schmeicel is also a contender for me but I’m also a Dane so I might view it with a bit colored glasses.
If I remeber correctly then one of Buffons ancestors or uncles or something was a goal keeper in AC Milan and when Juventus was relegated he also said that Milan was the only club he would even consider joining in Serie A.

          3. Yeah I think it was Gigi’s grandads brother or something. I Galliani tried to sign him a few times….Totti too..my two favourite non Milan players. I always got them on football manager though 😂😂

Schmeichel was first class, revolutionised goalkeeping

          4. Baresis Dream pretty sure the scorpion kick inventer was Higuita but Chillavert probably did it as well for showmanship but I might be wrong there, Either way both was pretty great. Miss the Colombian player Valderama 😀

          5. Yeah I think you are right there.

Totti, De Rossi and Florenzi has always been players I liked since the begining of their careers even if I’ve cursed them from time to time when we met them. Totti though I do recollect him spitting in the face of the Danish football international Christian Poulsen, Totti was known as the spitting lama in Denmark for a while 😀 he was a great player nevertheless.

    2. Both 100% on my bench. Ref Dida, the 00s team always ranks highly among people which I think is in part due to the huge terrestrial champions league exposure at the time. It was ‘star studded’ although I don’t think it holds a candle to Sacchi and Capello’s sides

        1. Definitely. We should have won the CL in 2004 and 2005…Ancelotti was different back then, no plan B. The tactical world was shifting to 4231 and out 4312 was vulnerable. I think Silvio made him play with two strikers as well whicu Ancelotti never did again when he left Milan

        1. And that’s what it’s all about buddy, we all fall in over with a Milan team at a certain point… for me it was Sacchi and Capello, watching the uneaten season on early sky sports, reading what I could in magazines. Then came James Richardson and C4…..I loved the 2000s team as well but like Dejan10 said, it should have done more

  5. An impossible task with too many great players to mention.

    I’ll give it a go

    Rossi

    Cafu Baresi Nesta Maldini

    Rijkaard Pirlo

    Savicevic Kaka Gullit

    Van Basten

        1. Yeah. But still, he’s considered a legend for both teams and one of the best Italian football players of all time (dubbed the Italian Pele)

          1. Undoubtedly. My father and uncles talked about him, that he was superbly gifted, very technical, vision of the game, tactical awareness etc.

    1. Agree. I would alternate between Sheva and Nordahl. And Liedholm , also from the Gre-No-Li swedish historical trio, I guess he maybe qualifies as sub. But Is hard to say, so many crackin’ players on our immensely legacy.

    1. I try one
      Kalac
Felippe Mattioni – Rami – Gustavo Gomez – Mesbah
Dhorasoo – Mati Fernandez – Poli
      Lapadulla – Matri

Oh forgot to add 1 more. Borini, yeah you can put him anywhere except GK

      1. to be fair Lapadula actually did fairly well with what he had to work with and scored something like ten goals and he was also bought from serie b if my memory serves me well currently?
mationi only got 1 match as well so that shouldn’t be a a decision maker and rami and and even gomez wasnt as bad as the latter sometimes was made to be. Overall not the most comforting squad.
Add terim, inzaghi or giampaolo as coach on top of it and we are in huge troubles though

Free transfer Soares anyone ? 2017 if i remember correctly never played though and think he retired afyer his contract with us expired 😀

      1. I don’t know which is scarier, that lineup itself or the fact that all these players played for Milan in pretty much the same era with Milan !!!

      2. I quite liked De Jong as he at least was a warrior hell I might actually start him now if he was younger and still active.

  6. I love Theo and he is indeed a world-class left back, but unless he was just kidding and having fun, it is not very classy to place oneself in such a list when you’re asked about it – unless you’re called Messi or Pelé or Maradona or Beckenbauer or arguably, to quote a Milan player, Paolo Maldini.

  7. In order to find an attacking duo worse than Destro and Matri, I don’t think you can even look through the squad of the team that was relegated to Serie B…

  8. Dida

    Cafu
    Nesta
    Baresi
    Maldini

    Pirlo
    Kaka
    Gatusso
    Rijkaard

    Shevchenko
Zlatan – not really but I just like his love for Milan too much

  9. SuperPippo. He doesn’t (quite) deserve to be in there on merit but deserves to be in there purely on the basis that he is SuperPippo.

I couldn’t get to his last game – my eldest son had just been born – but I don’t mind admitting, when he scored I actually put my hand on tv screen and cried like a baby.

  10. I’ll do it this way:
    4-1-2-1-2
    ———-Shevchenko——–Van Basten——
    ————————- Gullit————————
    ——–Rijkaard————————Rivera—–
    ————————-Pirlo————————–
    Maldini——Baresi——-Nesta——Tassotti
    ————————Rossi—————————
For subs/additionals players I’ll have Nordahl, Albertini, Kakà, Cafu, Lorenzo Buffon and Seedorf.
But there are many picks here that I did like as well (like @Fabri, @Z, @Drew, @SJF and @Gre-No-Li)

  11. Pippo brought us alot of emotions. Imagine how many goals he wouldve had if he wasnt offside. Great player. Obviously i loved watching weah. Abbiati was a brilliant servent. Most capped gk for milan. I also liked cocos journey with milan. Remember jens lehmans lol.

  12. I think our coach should play this style..
    Mike
    GABBIA-PAVLOVIC-THEO
    BENNECER—FOFANA
    REIJNDERS-lOFTUS
    PULISIC-MORATA-LEAO

    3-4-3

This is best..tomori,thiaw,calabria and the newly sign Royal are all bunch of jonkies

  13. Dida

    Baresi Nesta Maldini cafu

    Albertini Rijkaard Rivera Gullit

    Nordahl Altafini.

TRUTH there is way too much gods to pick from Milan’s history. From Cesare to trappatoni to costarcuta to lodetti, Ancelloti, weah, liedholm, Gren, Van Basten etc.

I am just so glad and grateful to be part of this beautiful history.
    Forza Rossoneri
    Forza Diavolo

  14. Cafu was great for Roma, not for Milan. Ronaldinho was better for Barcelona than for Milan. Savicevic was our best creative player post Gullit and pre Kaka’, not Ronaldinho.

Those of you picking Seedorf and Albertini should be ashamed. Seedorf was a lazy ****. He never would have been picked by Sacchi and Albertini was an above average player in an outstanding team.

Gullit was vastly superior to Shevchenko.

    1. You just proved you know absolutely NOTHING.
You called seedord and Albertini average and lazy respectively.
🤣😂🤣🤣🤣. Oh my goodness. You normally write nonsense. But this….

      This is outstandingly irrefutable NONSENSE.
