Back in 2011 when De Sciglio made his Milan debut, the expectations were high. He was dubbed the next Maldini and Milan supporters were happy as they assumed that they had found the perfect player to replace the legend.
Fast forward to 2016 and things are vastly different. Milan are currently in the process of securing the services of River Plate’s Leonel Vangioni and have purchased Luca Antonelli from Genoa, turning De Sciglio into more of an alternative.
But what has gone wrong for the 23-year-old fullback?
Many are of the opinion that De Sciglio is not mentally ready to play for such a big club as AC Milan. His inconsistencies are ever apparent and he lacks the characteristics to be a leader.
De Sciglio is full of potential however. He has decent speed, he’s a technical player, he understands the game and has decent delivery, but his inconsistency again hampers him most.
He’s easily disrupted once pressure is on him and tends to make silly errors despite his experience.
All hope is not lost as his performances for the Azzurri under the guidance of Conte have been a pleasant surprise in addition to the fact that he’s still quite young and has years ahead of him to live up to the initial ‘Next Maldini’ hype.
