Tuttosport: A two-decade drought – why Fonseca cannot underestimate the Coppa Italia

AC Milan will face a team from a lower division to begin their Coppa Italia campaign tomorrow, but they must not underestimate the opportunity.

As Tuttosport (via MilanNews) report, the situation that Milan face in the next few days certainly suggests the cup tie with Sassuolo will not be given priority. On Friday there is a game against Atalanta away from home and some starters need to catch their breath a bit.

However, the Rossoneri cannot afford to ignore the game against the Nerazzurri because the Coppa Italia must be a concrete objective. Taking to the field with the wrong attitude and spirit could make it an embarrassing night, given Sassuolo have stung Milan before and are top of Serie B.

The Coppa Italia is a trophy that Milan haven’t won for 21 years. It was in 2003 when Carlo Ancelotti was on the bench, shortly after lifting the Champions League in Manchester. They beat Roma in the final (4-1 win in the first leg at the Stadio Olimpico and then a 2-2 draw at San Siro on 31 May 2003).

Paulo Fonseca will have to give the right motivation to his team also because the domestic cup could be the ‘easiest’ trophy to win for Milan this year.

It is difficult to imagine winning the Scudetto or the Champions League, yet the chance to get a trophy in year one under the new coach cannot be ignored.

  1. Italian papers are full of sh. always up for negative sensation. now trying to increase pressure on an absolutely useless game, which give a perfect opportunity to rest starters and play our entire bench with some youngsters added in (Zeroli didnt start in the previous Futuro game). I really hope Fonseca is not reading these headlines. He needs to save the starters for the way more important league games. I prefer losing the game, than seeing Puli, Theo, etc. starting.
