Paulo Fonseca, manager of AC Milan

CM: Why Fonseca is wrong to keep proclaiming Milan as Scudetto contenders

The sight of the packed Napoli away end at San Siro brought a realisation that AC Milan are far from ready to compete for the title, a report claims.

Calciomercato.com write how Milan were left with nothing despite a good performance with plenty of goal-scoring opportunities created. The big match of the 10th round showed us a team that has been sculpted in Antonio Conte’s image, while Paulo Fonseca continues to struggle to mould his.

In sport, as in life, you have to set goals and try to be ambitious. Fonseca has been talking about the Scudetto since day one of his arrival yet as the weeks pass the games show that this team is not ready to aim for the title.

The Rossoneri are fragile in defence, not very clinical in attack and are still far from having a well-defined team identity. The Portuguese coach still has too many internal problems to resolve and cannot count on reserves.

The likes of Filippo Terracciano, Yunus Musah, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Noah Okafor were all deployed last night – admittedly due to the many selection issues – but each continue to show they cannot be relied upon.

Five defeats in the first 12 games of the season is a damning statistic. In fact, the 2019-20 season under Marco Giampaolo was the last time that it happened, with seven losses in the same span of games.

Milan, counting the first nine league games played, have seven points less than last year and six less than 2022-23. The comparison is even more contrasting with the year of the Scudetto: 11 points less.

With this points per game average, the most concrete objective must be qualification for the next Champions League. Milan are now at a crossroads: either they unite and turn things around or they risk having to suffer a lot even to reach the minimum objective.

  1. We can discuss a lot about the players, about the pairing of the defense, about the lack of leader in midfield, but after all it all comes to the coach,
when Fonseca is s*uck u can do nothing with the talented players.

  2. Simply put – Scudetto winners rarely lose more than 3 or 4 games over the season. Milan have lost 3 already.
The scudetto is gone, not that we were ever really in the running.

Now what we need is to find some form ad continuity. We need to figure out our best formation and perfect it. Blood our young players.

We may have ups and downs but we may also find a winning formula that could give us a run in europe and a chance at top 4. Mostly we could be ready for next year

The management dismantled a winning team (a young team). So year 0 it is again. Bravo Gerry and the Birds

    1. That’s not all, Fonseca needs to be sacked for a more competent coach immediately, Furlani Ibra and Moncada have done a dismal job so far and should be removed for proper sporting director, Scaroni should be removed as president as he is conflicted between Milan and being part of the leagues higher ups. They have all failed the scudetto winning players with their recruitment and baseless decisions, e.g it was obvious CDK needed a season or two to adapt it took Leao and Tonali the same and instead we gave him to Atalanta, sold Maldini, are going to lose Kalulu to a direct rival, I could go on

  3. The scudetto is still possible. But that means Milan cannot lose another league match this season. Sounds easy. Especially with that leaky defense.

  4. Acá el máximo responsable!!! ZLATAN IBRAHIMOVIC!! No pudo con su rol de directivo!!! Y POR SU ORGULLO (SINO CAMBIAN AHORA!!!) NOS UNDE!!! CON SU ORGULLO 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🇵🇹🇺🇲🤮🤮🤮

  5. Milan fans are losing faith so early. There’s a balance in this team than the previous. The absence of Leao, Bennacer, or Tomori, always made it hard for us to play well, let alone, win. The coach is working with what he has, and so far, we are seeing improvements. Who could have imagined a defensive pair of Pavlovic and Thiaw? These guys did well, regardless of the first goal. Maybe, a different ref would have given it as a foul on Pavlovic. Discipline is essential for the progress of the team. As much as I would love to see Leao, Theo, Tomori, in almost every game, I don’t mind the coach dropping them if they are not performing, or too full of themselves. We’ve had our ups and downs. Now, it’s time to move forward. Nothing is impossible.
