AC Milan host Empoli at San Siro tonight and although it is winnable on paper, they are a team that has surprised this season for several reasons.
Among the teams that not much was expected of before the season, Empoli stood out for an attitude that went against the trend of newly-promoted sides and it has paid off. Andreazzoli had promised at the beginning of the season that he did not want to distort his way of playing football, and we have seen that.
Their formation always includes at least three players with attacking qualities, often two attacking midfielders and a centre-forward. Empoli showed that they did not fear anyone, both at home and away.
Paradoxically, the team have fared better away from home perhaps because they have less pressure. The Azzurri always start to dominate the game with the direction that starts from the defence.
Calling Empoli a poor side this year is not fitting, because they play the best football among the clubs in the bottom half. Andreazzoli is the person in charge of their project and it should continue into next season, regardless of this year’s finish.
The likes of Pinamonti, Viti, Asllani, Bajrami and Henderson are an exciting core to build around.
