The future of AC Milan is still to be written, both on the pitch and in the management, but Tony D’Amico could have a big say in things.
MilanNews reports that in amongst the intrigue regarding the new sporting director, Atalanta’s D’Amico joins Fabio Paratici and Igli Tare in the list of candidates. It is easy to see why, looking at his work both at Hellas Verona and his current club.
As a player, D’Amico had a decent career as a midfielder between Serie C and Serie D, also wearing the shirts of historic clubs such as Cavese, Foggia, Empoli and Lecco. Having retired from football in 2013, D’Amico began working in the technical staff of Vigor Lamezia, before joining Verona in 2016.
He was the chief scout at first and then got a promotion to being the sporting director of the Gialloblu, building Ivan Juric’s side and discovering talents such as Amir Rrahmani, Marash Kumbulla and Sofyan Amrabat. They generated capital gains of over €55m, crucial during times of economic difficulty.
In 2022, he went to Atalanta to replace Giovanni Sartori. His task was to continue with La Dea’s model of talent identification, development and also turnover to support Gian Piero Gasperini’s work. Today they are fighting for the Scudetto, and won the Europa League last season.
Among the players brought to Bergamo by D’Amico, Rasmus Hojlund is certainly worth mentioning (then sold to United for €75m), but the big moves were made with Ademola Lookman (bought for just €9.5m), Ederson, Isak Hien, Charles De Ketelaere and last summer Mateo Retegui.
These are purchases that have now attracted the attention of Milan. D’Amico’s next challenge could therefore be the reconstruction of the Rossoneri, perhaps paired with Massimiliano Allegri on the bench.
smart. let’s get the guy who poached maldini and cdk from us. then we can buy them back at a premium
Why would Milan be buying back Paolo’s son and CDK?
The only players I’d take from Atalanta are Ederson and Retegui, plus Lookman. The rest will flop at any other team. Proven so many times in the last 5,6 years. Look at Koopmeiners at Juventus.
Ederson, Retegui, and Lookman would be too much of a dream come true damn.
they have, and should have a different model to Milan. Milan can’t be looking for unknown players that we can sell on for 20m, we are either going to become a selling club or more likely they won’t get a proper chance at Milan and get sold on
The new SD should align with the coach.. no matter what players the will SD sign, it will be useless if the coach cannot apply to his tactics
