Davide Calabria’s departure has more been a question of when not if for large parts of the 2024/25 Serie A season, and AC Milan are set to part with the defender today.
With Milan’s plans to upgrade the squad as a whole, the underperforming Calabria was an almost guaranteed departure, and with Emerson Royal joining the club in the summer, his position dropped. Kyle Walker’s addition in January has also further impacted his rank.
So with playing time probably difficult to come by for the rest of the season, and no interest in a contract renewal, a move in January seemed like a growing possibility, and today, the final steps seem likely to be made.
Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Bologna are ‘very close’ to a deal with the Rossoneri captain, and the deal could be closed today. However, the two clubs are still deciding on the compensation fee to allow Calabria to leave his contract early.
Speaking to Sky last night, Di Marzio stated that the Diavolo will not look to replace him, and Milan News have relayed his comments.
“Tomorrow [Saturday, February 1] Bologna and Milan will meet again to define the compensation that will go to Milan for Calabria’s immediate transfer to Bologna. I can add that Calabria will not be replaced: in Milan’s ideas on the right flank there will be Walker and Jimenez.”

why why?
Shameful exit.
Cant even enjoy the good news of signing Gimenez properly
An exit out the back door…
Absolutely not what somone of his ability and Milan legacy deserves…
Romagnoli 2.0
Romagnoli has literally done nothing after he left, what type of comparison is this
“oh he’ll be crap even after leaving oh noooo”
if Calabria & Romagnoli is considering as “nothing” after what they’ve done 4 Milan then what is jeri? a cancer like u?
Well Romagnoli earned around 6.3 mil pr. year whereas Calabria easily could be renewed as he earns around 3.5 mil pr. year and the club even chose to give Royal a better deal. Calabria has been mistreated by the club, the same can’t be said about Romagnoli as he also ended up joining the club he had supported since childhood.
Best of wishes for Calabria who I always liked and appreciated.
Wasn’t expecting that today as I hadn’t heard anything about it. The comment that he won’t be replaced by a new addition, leaves open the door for other positions maybe. Anyway – thank you Captain for your service!
Another good news
What legacy, what ability?A guy is a terible defender, otherwise he would be given the chance to stay.Capitan?Thats a cirkus…..for years he was known as team weak spot,no use in front,no use at back, especialy not in 16.-er.Maybe he is ok as a type, character ,whatever, but on field he is more or less useless.Wish him all the best, arivederci capo! Will be forgotten in no time
He was the best defensive RB in seria A for a couple of seasons. Next time check something before you just spew nonsense. Also i bet he will be remembered longer than some disrespectful fool.
So there is two category for best RB in serie A? Defensive and offensive RB? how about Attacking and defensive Striker? Did Morata win?
It might be surprising to you but defending is actually important trait for defenders.
Well you are absolutely correct here in your assessments Rossi and Calabria has in some seasons been the best tackler in Serie A and to make it even more clear he also in one season was the rb with the most assists in the league. Calabria has always been mistreated by a segment of AC Milan supporters exactly as some did towards Abate who coincidentally also had some of the best rb stats in some seasons with us. Guess people just doesn’t remember or know of it but its simple facts nevertheless.
many RB better than Cala but not royal, tomori, musa, terra, salad which is still here as burden
Squad lists ?? We don’t have enough Italians to complete the lists ??
I would have kept him for uefa list as he’s homegrown
I also think he would have been kept if Emerson had been transferred this window. Sliding doors etc
Assuming no serious injuries though, am excited to see Jimenez given a chance at RB and in theory Terraciano can cover there, with Walker obviously signed to be first choice
Sayonara captain and thank you for everything.
Not the greatest of players but I would have wished for a better exit than a mid-season while the team was ranked 7th or 8th.
Him being Italian means that we can’t replace him in the UEFA squad list. Not that matters anymore since I don’t see us getting past this round to be honest.
Calabria is a much better player than Emerson. However, given we have signed Walker he is not going to be a starter so it makes sense to sell him and grant him regular playing time.
what is unacceptable and shameful is the farewell for Milan captain and a player who has spent most of his life at Milan. He deserves more respect and dignity than being sold like this. These Americans have no idea about the culture of the club. They did the same to Maldini.
Ambrosini was not treated any better. Milan aint got no class. Even if you wanted to release him, why not sit him down and tell him so? when you treat players like data, they treat you like an ATM – a cash cow.
Squad lists and all don’t matter if there is a good deal to be made. hehe
Even that Calabria has been treated so bad by this club he chooses to leave now just to help the club to rise some money. (He could wait for a couple of months and leave on free and get a better contract for himself.)
Meanwhile the players that the americans brought are refusing to go away and are staying to just suck money from the club. Completely different mentality.
The mental gymnastics you go through just to make Calabria seem like a good player is astounding lmao
Mental gymnastics are your thing. My original comment doesn’t even mentions performance. Its about Calabria respect and love towards Milan till the very end.
I do not support this decision. Not because I believe we really need Calabria, who never was close to being remarkable, and really doesn’t fit our ambitions. But we are helping a direct rival for top 4 spots. And for no financial gain it appears. Strange move to be honest, but I guess they wanted him out of the locker room.
Truly bad news..he is loyal and our captain. This American capitalist really makes me sick
Oh it’s the owner now who decides all the players & contracts? Not Furlani, Moncada & Zlatan? OK then… 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀
I bet Gerry himself found Gimenez and negotiated the deal too, right? 😀
You sound like an 80’s Soviet cartoon.
What?! Real shame for it to end this way but our UCL squad is down to one homegrown option, which currently includes neither fit right back.
How bout a left back. A proper left back to give Theo a wake up competition and not a converted left back.
Season in season out the management have always neglected that position and Theo feel so much comfortable doing as he wish knowing he has no competitor
What a mistreatment of a true Milan player. You can argue if it is time to upgrade the position but to push him out the back door during the winter window is shameful. For all Calabria has given the team he could at least get a sending off from the fans at the end of the season.
Well they can only replace him with youth level players. They can’t just magic up a senior replacement who can occupy an ex academy over 23 slot.
Milan’s defense was always vulnerable with Calabria back there. Management could have given him a softer exit, but it was clear Walker was coming to replace him, not Emerson.
