Christian Pulisic’s career has been reignited this season. While he hasn’t started every game, his record for goals per 90 minutes is one of Serie A’s best.
The American is scoring around 0.4 goals per game, the same as his teammate Rafael Leao and not too far behind others like Manuel De Luca and Lautaro Martinez.

Pulisic’s contract with Milan runs until June 2027. The club has an option to extend that until 2028, but haven’t yet pulled the trigger. Why have the Rossoneri put talks on hold?
Focusing on the title race
Journalist Daniele Longo has said Milan’s leadership will meet with Pulisic’s representatives at the end of the season. Milan’s final league game is at home against Cagliari on 24 May.
Pulisic will then travel to the World Cup to join his teammates with the USA national team, who are co-hosting along with Canada and Mexico.
USA are underdogs and less likely to win football’s biggest prize than teams like Morocco, Colombia and Belgium, at least according to the current World Cup odds.
Milan want to focus on the title race. This would be their first Serie A win since 2022. Their archrivals Inter won the league more recently in 2024.
Pulisic reinvented
Pulisic is mostly known as a winger, but in Massimiliano Allegri’s 3-5-2, he has often played as one of the front two. His goals have often come in big moments, including in the 2-1 win over Napoli in September. He scored the only goal in November’s Milan derby.
Pulisic’s season hasn’t been without negative drama. Allegri had to intervene as Leao and Pulisic clashed during Milan’s 1-0 loss to Lazio in March. Leao had made his feelings clear during the match when Pulisic had twice failed to pass to him when he would have been through on goal.
The forwards, who have not yet quite gelled as a partnership, then reportedly clashed in the tunnel and dressing room. Allegri tried to downplay the matter and said it was natural to look for answers after a defeat.
USA at the World Cup
Being co-hosts, the USA didn’t have to qualify for the World Cup. But their record in the CONCACAF Nations League and Gold Cup over the last year has been decent. They have lost to Panama, Canada, and Mexico, but beaten Trinidad and Tobago, Saudi Arabia, Haiti, and Guatemala.
Under head coach Mauricio Pochettino, USA have struggled to beat stronger opposition. Pochettino will hope that the players missing for the Gold Cup final against Mexico will return fit and in form this summer. Pulisic’s last match for his country was the defeat against Canada in March 2025.
Mexico’s victory extended their Gold Cup record to 10 titles. The country will host matches in three cities. The iconic Estadio Azteca hosted many matches of the 1970 World Cup, including the final.
That tournament was the first shown in colour television and is fondly remembered for the final between Brazil and Italy, which included a Carlos Alberto goal widely considered one of the greatest of all time.
If Pochettino’s team starts performing against the bigger teams, Pulisic may have more negotiating power at Milan. Before then, Allegri has a title race on his hands – and two strikers who aren’t getting on.
