Inter chiefs Zhang and Marotta both hoping to draw Milan in quarter-finals

By Oliver Fisher -

Inter president Steve Zhang and CEO Beppe Marotta both want to draw AC Milan in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

There are plenty of similarities regarding the two teams and their path to the quarter-finals of the tournament as Inter followed Milan’s lead to a tee last night by drawing 0-0 away from home in the second leg after winning 1-0 at San Siro.

Both Milanese clubs defended their lead with heart and organisation, forced to protect themselves due to the qualities of their opponents, and also got a bit of help from their respective goalkeepers Mike Maignan and Andre Onana.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Italia, Zhang stated that he would like to see a Milan derby in the final eight of the competition because of what it would mean for Italy football.

“All the teams left are strong, but I have to say that the derby has been the most emotional fixture for me, so yes, I’d like to see it happen,” he said (via SempreInter).

On what reaching the quarter-finals means, he added: “At the start of every season we have a goal, which is to go as far as we can in every competition that we’re in.

“Reaching the quarterfinals causes a lot of emotions, it shows that after seven years we’re heading in the right direction, and that everyone, including the coaching staff, is giving their all.”

Marotta also spoke about the possibility of drawing the Rossoneri: “It would be exciting and emotional, but now we’re just celebrating that we’ve gotten to a point where we haven’t in the last twelve years.

“It’s a highly prestigious objective that crowns the work that we’ve done. Then we’ll see what happens in the draw on Friday,” Marotta concluded,” he said (via SempreInter).

  1. the difference in thought process, Maldini and Pioli said they would like to avoid Italian teams so that all three teams would have possibility of progressing to semis and now these guys need an emotional derby right now, why not dream of an emotional semi or final even if chances are mere in reality.

  2. Because they believe Acmilan would be their easy way to Semi final having beaten us alot already this season and see how Milan have performedthis year so they did their maths..this has nothing to do with emotions but mathematics 😂😂🤣

    1. But this is europe. Not italian league. Its always different Milan in europe and in italia. Due to their experience and history, which is very different comparing with Inter…even Juventus.

  3. LOL. Inter directors have zero confidence they could go further and that’s why they want to meet Milan next round instead of – let’s say – the final. 😀 😀 😀

No one can blame them though. Inter will not go through who ever they’ll get next round.
