Barcelona president names Milan among clubs who ‘could accept’ Super League

By Oliver Fisher -

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has suggested that there is a planned relaunch of the European Super League project, while he claimed that AC Milan are among the interested clubs.

It was back in 2021 that 12 of Europe’s top clubs had launched the creation of a new ‘Super League’ which would be governed by the teams themselves.

The plan was that it would replace their participation in the Champions League, and whule it was met by the threat of severe sanctions from UEFA, the idea of a relaunch has been constantly mentioned.

A22 Sports – the company who are behind the potential relaunch – explained their proposed format during an official pitch in December.

Laporta spoke in an interview with RAC1 about the possibility of a Super League reboot and he even named the teams that would participate, with his comments relayed by Calciomercato.com.

“The Super League could already exist from next season, or from the 2025-26 season. Whether the English come or not, I don’t care,” he began.

“A proposal is made to a club in which just by participating, you tell them that they will earn 100 million, which you don’t even earn by winning the Champions League.

“Which clubs could accept already now? Barcelona, Madrid, Inter, Milan, Napoli, Roma, Marseille, three Dutch teams, Brugge and Anderlecht. That’s 16 or 18 teams… It would be better with 16 And other clubs could join later.”

Juventus’ absence was confirmed. After being among the founding member clubs, Juve decided to leave also by virtue of their newfound relationship with UEFA and a desire to protect it.

  1. Super league is over. If ACM forcing their way to SL , they will be out from Serie A. Only barca still insist super league due to their bad finance

    1. Yes, that’s the idea: Inter, Juventus and Milan leave Serie A and UEFA. That’s step 1 … then, over time, more clubs join them.

The goal is to take back control of the sport from the corrupt bureaucrats at FIFA, UEFA, and national organizations. INCLUDING the Italian Football Federation, which is not as bloated and incompetent a bureaucracy as FIFA … but close. As evidenced by the fact that it’s 2024, and they still haven’t managed to accomplish the SIMPLEST TASK THERE IS: to stop random drunk idiots from shouting racist slurs at players on the field.

A privately run, competent Super League would deal with that issue on day one. It’s the easiest thing in the world to deal with. It’s been dealt with years ago, in the US … by privately owned leagues like MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL, etc. If someone tried that at a professional US sporting event, it would be a matter of minutes before they’re thrown out, and permanently banned from ever attending another game.

    2. Serie A is going to sh*t and then eventually bankrupt in case if you haven’t been seeing the trends.

FIGC is a bunch of dinosaurs running the league backwards and its demise isn’t too far off. Milan’s salvation is eventually SuperLeague.

  2. English PL is already a SuperLeague on its own, revenues and marketing wise. So they don’t really have the need for SuperLeague. Germans are also in their own little football world both structural and financial wise. Spain and Italy on the other hand are broke and desperately need another source of higher income to compete on top level. Let alone the coruption and outdated management of their football associations that are pulling the clubs and leagues down.
