Gilardino admits Genoa targeted a perceived weakness in draw with Milan

By Oliver Fisher -

Genoa boss Alberto Gilardino has admitted that he targeted a particular flank during their 3-3 draw against AC Milan yesterday, praising the performance from his side.

Genoa got themselves an early lead Mateo Retegui converted a penalty after a foul by Fikayo Tomori, then Alessandro Florenzi headed in to make it 1-1, but the visitors retook the lead through Caleb Ekuban as Milan’s defensive woes continued.

It looked like a Matteo Gabbia header and a volley from Olivier Giroud had bailed the Rossoneri out as they took a late 3-2 lead, yet Retegui popped up again to get another goal and ensure Genoa left with a draw amid fan protests and a Curva Sud walkout.

Gilardino spoke to DAZN at the end of the game to give his assessments after what was an entertaining game in terms of the numbers of goals scored, but not one for those who enjoy seeing good defending. His words were relayed by MilanNews.

How do you feel after the draw?

“I’m happy, excellent interpretation of the match. We had prepared for it like this. This team has a big heart and wants to amaze, we must cultivate these feelings and this must be our DNA. Coming here to Milan against this Milan and playing a match like this, we need and need this type of feeling.”

Were you more satisfied with the comeback or the maturity with which you faced this game at San Siro?

“We have grown week after week, game after game. We have gained awareness. I repeat that coming here to play against Milan and having this interpretation of the match is an experienced team, a team that wants to put anyone in difficulty.

“We conceded a lot, true, but we have to give credit to this Milan for the great qualities they have in the attacking phase. I’m very happy, we had some absences and those who played and those who came in really gave everything.”

You often attacked on Theo’s side…

“We had prepared it like this, in certain situations to create numerical superiority on the right side, on the side of Leao and Theo. There were many dangerous situations, including goals. We always created spaces to be able to play long and to be able to go inside.”
