MN: Milan seven points better than last season after 21 games – the figures

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan are currently on a four-game winning streak in the league, six if we make it unbeaten, and they have cemented their spot in third place in the standings. Compared to last season, as a report highlights, they are seven points better.

Stefano Pioli and his players had a tough period in October/November, going for league games without a win, but have since rebounded completely. In fact, they have registered just one defeat and one draw since that poor run of form, with the rest of the games being wins (7).

As highlighted by MilanNews this season, Milan are seven points better than last season, when they had 38 points after 21 games. And compared to the Scudetto season, which was in 2021-22, the Rossoneri are just three points behind.

  • Milan 20-21: 49 points in 21 rounds
  • Milan 21-22: 48 points in 21 rounds
  • Milan 22-23: 38 points in 21 rounds
  • Milan 23-24: 45 points in 21 rounds

It remains to be seen if Milan can continue their positive run of form, taking on Bologna next weekend. The Rossoblu have been one of the big surprises this season but, having said that, the Rossoneri prevailed in the first leg by two goals to nil. And this time it will be at San Siro.

Yesterday’s win against Udinese was the best confidence boost Milan could ask for, coming back from 2-1 behind to break the poor run of results at Stadio Friuli (first win since 2020). So hopefully that will push them to even more success.

    1. Must be the terrible manager that everyone wants sacked.

The fact that people like you don’t appreciate how disruptive last summer was means that you then underestimate how good a job Pioli (and the players including the new signings) have done in the circumstances (especially with injuries).

In fact people like you don’t seem to appreciate anything so it’s all a bit of waste of time.

      1. Hahah chill bro, it’s called sarcasm. and Pioli still objectively sucks because it should’ve been better with deeper CL run and a chance at Coppa Italia, given the players he now has.

But hey, I guess someone must know it all by claiming himself the internet heir of Maldini right?

        1. With that level of spending we should’ve been competing for the title.

Alas we’re in a better position than I expected so I’m happy to be proven wrong on that one.

Somehow your expectations are both pretty underwhelming and unrealistic at the same time.

      2. LOL. How many more points do we have at this stage vs. the same time in 2017-18? 14 points? Pioli is a maestro! Last summer we finished 5th, so the fact that we’re 7 points more at the same point this season doesn’t mean we’re doing better than expected, but that we underperformed last season and that we’re doing the bare minimum this season, i.e. top 4 finish. I think we reasonably expected to be challenging for the title and playing CL football in the spring. Therefore, we are still underachieving vis-a-vis expectations.

If Pioli can get us to within 3-4 points of first by the end of the campaign I would consider keeping him for the final season of his contract. Of course, given how things have gone in almost all of his seasons with us, there could be a February crash and ensuing struggle to finish 4th instead. Let’s see what happens.

  1. Yes MN, we all know January last year was one of our worst periods in this tenure. So obviously any comparison now is going to be in favour of the current season. Where was this comparison all season?? Lol 😂 I’ll tell you, we were behind or about the same for the most part. We’re still behind “regular” seasons 21 & 22. But hopefully we can do better 😊

    1. But we also didn’t have that many injuries during those seasons. Since switching back to the usual formation the team has improved. Other than individual mistakes I think Pioli isn’t doing bad and I would prefer him over Motta or Conte.

      1. The switch in formation does seem have made a massive different.

I really don’t understand the attraction to the rigid 433 formation. A team needs someone running between lines. It’s just a shame we don’t have a proper AM!

        1. Well… hes been on a more hybrid 4231…….
Id like to try Reijnders where loftus cheeks is at actually in that formation… mayde drop him back down(like last match at the end)… or sign a more defensive and higher “8” ……

          1. It’s looking more like the Bennacer-Tonali-Kessie set up that took us to the title.

I would love to see an amazing AM in there. Could be the thing that takes to the next level.

      2. @Grande I’m totally with Pioli..matter of fact I was indifferent before but now solidly on his side. There’s no coach that could put out the results he’s been putting out with the number of injuries we’ve had imo.
That being said, my comment was really a jab at how MN selectively chose to put out an article about points difference in JANUARY when we all know we sucked last year around this time and began losing points. If you compared this season vs a regular year, we’re about on par or slightly worse. I didn’t see this type of article when earlier on in the season when we were behind last year’s performance after our shiny signings 🤷‍♂️
Last year we also prioritized UCL over Serie A while this year completely out of that competition

        1. by the end of the 21st round last season, we already faced inter twice (losing once), and we faced a MUCH STRONGER version of lazio and napoli. In 3 of these games, we went back with no points. While it’s only speculation, we can certainly assume that this season we would have lost to these same versions of those teams aside perhaps Lazio.

    2. Injuries 100%, although we’ve had injury problems for years now. Way before Pioli arrived.

But also back then we had a proper defensive midfielder (and Kjaer was a beast). Our defense in the center is mediocre, especially compared to the kessie-bennasser days, and we all saw this already from preseason.

  2. I have to give props to Pioli here, he’s been working with injury ravaged team, forced to play some players out of position and rely on youngsters but still managed to hold on to 3rd spot with not so much of a distance to the leaders. Team is clicking. Better late then never.

  3. I beleve this season up to now is still in par with last one. Yes we are better 7 points in the league but we also are out of the Champions League. Inter and Juve have just lost once in the league, the only way we can get the Scudetto is by beating them on the match. We really need a good sprint in this second half of the season.

    1. It seems we will need to be perfect. Juventus and Inter are running like clocks because they have proper systems. It’s hard to imagine us basically winning out, which at this point is what it seems we’ll need to do.

  4. Numbers speak louder then words. I would only change Pioli for someone top and only if he has proven record of alignment with ehat Milan’s new phylosophy is. This season is not over yet a lot can happen until the seasons end game. Juve and Inter haven’t gone through any dips thus far…. This is still a 3 way race

  5. Yes, we have 7 points more than last season in this moment but we are out of Champions League and almost out of scudetto race. We still loose silly points with the smaller teams. We must work better on mentality. I hope our boys and mr Pioli will do much better in the second part of the championship . I still have some hopes to championship race winning. It seems the worst has past for us by now, injury crisis and some lack of confidence…

  6. We have a better squad and realistically we should have at minimum 49 points. So it’s still a disappointment because the games we drop points in were games we should have won except for the derby against Inter.

Napoli and Leece games were winning by 2 goals and somehow managed to get a point.

The game against Udinese at home was just the wrong tactics and I don’t get why Pioli felt like he needed to change our formation we never used to any success before.

Atalanta game we should have won. We have a far better squad than Atalanta. But somehow we end up losing to them twice.

I am not satisfied with where we are now because we should have been in the scudetto race with 49points from 21 games.

  7. We are doing well much of that is due to pioli ,,that’s a fact …DO NOT KNOW why some of you are so opposed to him ,,,likewise with Olivier Giroud..he is having an amazing season …We went through a difficult patch as do most good teams ,,,but like most good teams we are bouncing back ..
It’s due to the harmony and togetherness we have as a squad …Loftus cheek well done on your display against udinese ,,,like wise with the substitutions pioli made …great performances from okafor and jovic when they came on …coming back to Olivier Giroud,,yes he didn’t score ,,,but poili was wise and left him on …Reason we would not have won this match without him …involved in all three goals .

  8. Pls calculate all match/season..ie 3 point win include in Champion league, any match in season..then divide by total match..still better/same as last season?

    1. Yes. 10pts in CL group last year vs 8 this year. -2 difference
The +7 in the league > than points lost in CL this year. I dont recall how we did in the italian cup, but it wouldnt matter given analysis above.

  9. Statistics should be while taking context into consideration, otherwise you’ll end up with meaningless comparison.
by the end of the 21st round last season, we already faced inter twice (losing once), and we faced a MUCH STRONGER version of lazio and napoli. In 3 of these games, we went back with no points. While it’s only speculation, we can certainly assume that this season we would have lost to these same versions of those teams aside perhaps Lazio.
It’s better to wait till the 38th round to make comparisons, or at least compare our results against similar opposition, but even there you’ll have to take into account transfer.
But I’ll say this, the ONLY reason we are doing better than last season (where we won nothing btw), is that we have better depth and better individual players, at least in the offensive department.
