Pioli says Milan suffered ‘as a team’ against Fiorentina and discusses Camarda debut

By Isak Möller -

After the game between AC Milan and Fiorentina, Stefano Pioli shared his thoughts with the media. It was a crucial win for the manager and his side, although he admitted that it wasn’t a brilliant performance.

Milan struggled to impose themselves in the first half but headed into the interval with a 1-0 lead. Luka Jovic combined brilliantly with Theo Hernandez, who was brought down in the box. The Frenchman calmly converted the winner himself.

In the second half, Milan survived an onslaught from Fiorentina thanks to Mike Maignan, who made a stunning save in the final minute of extra time. Speaking to Sky Italia, as cited by MilanNews, Piola shared his thoughts on the game and the debutant Camarda.

On the game…

“We played a special match, which had to be done like this, perhaps suffering a little. However, we were a team and worked well. It was a game played mentally, also with an environment and a stadium that needed this, and which perhaps today was a little different than usual.”

On the match against Borussia Dortmund…

“We will have to be ready. These are matches that prepare themselves, we want to do well.”

On Camarda…

“Camarda is a good boy, he’s very young, he’s talented and he’s also mature, making his debut at this age is not for everyone, he deserved it.

“He knows he’s talented, but he’s a very humble guy, very willing, very well-liked by everyone in my locker room. Clearly, he has to follow his path and we will accompany him.”

On Fiorentina…

“Fiorentina have raised their centre of gravity a lot, we weren’t used to playing like this, but we have to do it and today it was like this. We know how to defend low and suffer a bit, even if we risked too much on the corners.”

Juve and Inter?

“Let’s think about ourselves, we have to give continuity to our path, the best result would be a draw.”

On Chukwueze and his journey at Milan…

“Honestly Chukwu arrived this summer almost last, after a difficult summer where he hadn’t worked much. I liked him tonight: he worked, he moved. But from quality players it’s also right to expect some goals, some assists.”

On Jovic…

“He played a good game. He made a good pass for Theo’s penalty, it’s a shame that he didn’t score the goal because he has the quality to score those goals there. I still want something more from him because he has the qualities, he has the means that not even he knows about, both physical and technical.”

Maignan was voted the MOTM and you can take a look at our player ratings here. Camarda, meanwhile, became the youngest debutant in Serie A history at 15 years and 260 days. A good night for Milan, in other words.

  1. Pioli : Well, lately they never praised me about my tactics and how I always played Krunic.

Pioli again : okay, I will field Camarda. At least they praised me about “giving trust to youngster” mehehehe

    Sorry guys, don’t mind me

    1. Wat r u talking?? Sempremilan page always talks highly about pioli and his tactics. Never said a word against his tactical inferiority and stupidity’s.

    2. It is now very clear that this team under Pioli will never play better, or achieve anything, we hardly created anything, played defensively and was out matched by Fiorentina, their coach did everything for them to win yesterday, while ours could not fashion out a reaction to the pressure they were putting on us, I don’t think we can beat Dortmund with this approach, and honestly at this point changing Pioli is the best thing to do, if not, we might not go to the UCL, and we risk him burning the new reinforcements just the way he has been doing, Maldini saw this and understood this, we need a new direction

  2. Solid minutes by the young lad. Glad be was able to experience the game, full stadium against a big team and won. Just gotta keep his head on him and I’m sure he’ll do fine

  3. We should thank our lucky stars for that last minute save by Mike…that would have been a routine goal had we conceded, probably had 3 similar goals against us in recent times. But the team performed better than expected given all the injuries, we usually chew our nails when either Leao or Giroud is not around, but I liked how everyone was involved defensively…they suffered together, they collected 3 valuable points as a unit. Now let’s pray for a miracle against Dortmund…

  4. I agree with Pioli on chikwueze

Chukwueze work his socks off for the team in the match yesterday. That is effort and desire to contribute.

We will take this as a positive improvement for a guy that lacked preseason training and minutes in matches to be in top condition coupled with the injuries he suffered.

It is glaring that he is lacking confidence that is required in his role to become decisive.

Hopefully, the 2 back to back matches will help him get back his rymthm.

The fact is the Rossoneri needs chukwuze to become important and decisive in matches.
