Player Ratings: AC Milan 0-0 Sassuolo – Theo explosive, Bennacer error-prone

By Nikita Fesyukov -

AC Milan did not manage to win their third consecutive win and were held to a goalless draw against Sassuolo at the San Siro on the occasion of the club’s 120th anniversary. Here are the player ratings from the matchup.

STARTING XI

Donnarumma (6.5): Calm, reliable. 4 years after making his professional debut in the same matchup, the goalkeeper has shown incredible progress and maturity, despite his still very young age. Made a couple of great saves and is a certainty in goal.

Conti (5.5): Had big problems against Sassuolo’s left side, especially Boga, who caused him trouble throughout the entire match. It seemed that he lost almost every duel against the winger and was only lucky that Boga’s end-product is not of the best.

Musacchio (5.5): An average performance. Made some unnecessary errors, fouls and misplaced passes that created trouble, especially from the already-mentioned Boga. But luckily for him, it never resulted in a goal.

Romagnoli (6.5): Was definitely the better of the two centre-backs today. Made a couple of minor errors but overall he built on his performance from the Bologna match and seemed very comfortable in general.

Theo Hernandez (7): A player of incredible, speed, acceleration and stamina. He was explosive throughout the whole match and supported the attack even in the 95th minute. Could have had another goal but it was disallowed for a dubious decision. Did well even in the defensive phase, despite this clearly being his weaker spot.

Kessie (5.5): Seemed a bit anonymous in the midfield. Had several decent moments but it all looked irrelevant in the general perspective. His passing on some occasions was not good enough.

Bennacer (5): Had a quiet first half and dictated the tempo in a decent manner up until the moment when he did not convert the golden opportunity and missed an open goal. From then, it went downhill and he looked really careless, error-prone. He gave away the ball on numerous occasions and created dangerous counter-attacks for Sassuolo. A step back for the Algerian.

Bonaventura (5.5): And a step back also for Bonaventura. Had many, many chances but did not convert a single one, despite one being really golden. Otherwise, his game was not that bad and he was involved, as usual, combining well on several occasion but the final step was something he missed today.

Suso (6): Didn’t look bad at all in the first half and was the reference point of the team once again with some great passes and plays. In the second half, he regressed a bit and was not as influential, seeing as the attacking play mostly went through the left side.

Piatek (6): Much better than before the Bologna match. He was involved, had the right movement and had an overall very positive approach. Could have scored a header in the second half, which would have been the cherry on top and a complete performance but it was not meant to be.

Calhanoglu (5.5): A strange player indeed. He seems to be anonymous throughout most of the match and then shoots at goal out of nowhere. It was by no means a terrible performance but not as impactful and cynical as it would have been desirable.

SUBSTITUTIONS

Paqueta (5.5): Looked quite lively after coming on initially and combined well with the other players. However, that lasted only for a couple of minutes and during his time on the pitch, he missed two big opportunities while continuing to play in a somewhat anonymous manner.

Leao (6.5): Entered the pitch in a very positive manner and could have easily scored the winner for the Rossoneri. He was very unlucky, as his first shot rattled the crossbar and the second one hit the post.
