Romagnoli once again discusses decision to leave Milan: “We had different views”

By Oliver Fisher -

Alessio Romagnoli has spoken again about his decision to leave AC Milan last summer and join his boyhood club Lazio on a free transfer.

Romagnoli spent over half a decade at Milan having joined back in the summer of 2015, but he left on a free transfer and joined the team he grew up supporting at the end of last season.

He has previously said that there could have been ‘more clarity’ around his renewal with the Rossoneri – which ended up never being finalised – perhaps because Milan did not negotiate with Romagnoli soon enough or make their plans clear.

Last night Lazio beat Empoli and secured second place in the standings, something that few believed possible at the start of the season, as underlined by Romagnoli.

“We’re happy because we wanted to finish second. We had a great season, even if we only believed in it, we knew we were strong,” he said (via Calciomercato.com).

“I knew we had a lot of potential and I’m happy. We had a great season. Here I found a project that convinced me and I knew that here I could enhance my characteristics.”

Speaking more specifically about his decision to leave Milan, he admitted that the time was right to try something new.

“A cycle was over, it was right to leave, we had different views. I will always thank them but I’m happy like this.”

Finally, he spoke about working under Maurizio Sarri: “He is a master, one of the few who teaches football. We have had a season better than those who thought we could not get to the Champions League, we are happy to have done our talking on the pitch.”

  1. He didn’t fit here anymore because Pioli is limited tactically and doesn’t know how to best set up a formation and playstyle for the players he has at his disposal. Sad. Glad Alessio has done well instantly. Just shows there’s not one way to play defense like Pioli thinks and it proved it this year bc our defense was awful.

    1. Just what i was thinking. Romagnoli was bad under Pioli and now suddenly under Sarri he is a top player again. Lazio defence was much better then ours this year mainly thanks to Romagnoli. Just shows you that people who scream “Pioli dosen’t have good players” have no idea what they are talking about. Paqueta is a similar example for the AM position. Not good enough for Pioli and sold for 20mil, while he is good for everyone else. From PL to French League to Brazil’s national team. His value is 45mil now and rising lol. Pioli is just a very limited coach.

      1. According to your comment , pioli doesnot have good player? Lets stick with rebic ,origi, cdk, junior messias, saladmaker, calabria ,pobega, bakayoko, florenzi, ballo toure, tatarusanu next season with new coach i want to see that new coach train that player above reach semifinal CL & win scudetto . When new player success : woww it is maldini work perfect signing . When new player sucks or flop : damn it is bald head coach limited tactic mistake not maldini fault because he always signing world class player this season like junior messias, florenzi, origi,CDK and loan superstar like Dest, bakayoko,Brahim

        1. You see this is exactly what was said for Romagnoli and Paqueta during their time under Pioli, yet now there they are under different coaches being better than the players that we have. Also excuse me but neither Spezia neither Salarentina have better players than the ones that you are pointing out above (Some of those players were actually top notch in their previous teams). Yet we constantly get outplayed by small teams like Spezia and Salarentina. How is that posible if it’s all do to the players? I mean i can’t force you to see something that you don’t wan’t to see, but there is a reason why so many players underperform under Pioli.

          1. Romagnoli top player my ass, I can guarentee you hvent watched a single Lazio game this season

            Thiaw is already miles better
