Tomori discusses England call-ups and positive start to season with Milan

By Isak Möller -

Fikayo Tomori has been one of the best players in Serie A at the start of this season. Leading AC Milan from the back, he has been pivotal and in a recent interview, he spoke about the inconsistency with the English national team.

Tomori has often been left out of the England squad by Gareth Southgate, despite doing well for Milan. Lately, however, he has seemingly won over the manager even if sufficient playing time is lacking still.

Speaking to the media at the English camp, as cited by The Express, Tomori opened up about the struggles to get into the national team. He also spoke briefly about his start to the season with Milan, stating that it has gone ‘really well’.

On not always being called up…

“Has there been an element of frustration? Yeah of course. Most players will say once you come here, you want to stay here and when you get a taste for it, you want to keep building on it.

“My England career’s been a bit stop-start. When I was 21 and I first got called up I made a few appearances off the bench and then after the COVID year, I wasn’t playing as much so obviously, I wasn’t getting called up. Then I went to Milan and I’ve been in a few camps, out a few camps.”

His recent form…

“This season has started really well and I’ve managed to play a few games. I’ve also come to every camp. So yeah, it has started off well and now I just want to keep it going and play more games, get more caps.”

As with any player on international duty, Milan are hoping that the defender will return without any injuries. Not counting Davide Bartesaghi, the Englishman and Malick Thiaw are the only centre-backs available at the moment due to several injuries.
