AC Milan and Inter confirm they have submitted new plan to Council regarding stadium project

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan and Inter have officially confirmed that they have deposited their latest plan for the construction of a new stadium and development of the San Siro area.

The two clubs have made their desire to build a new state-of-the-art stadium well known and although progress was initially very slow with a lot of opposition to the demolition of the current San Siro, things have begun to move forward.

It was recently reported by Calcio e Finanza that the two clubs are accelerating their plans to try and finalise everything regarding the ‘new San Siro’ and are ready to resume talks after a few months in which they have worked to alter their plans to satisfy the Council.

Via a press release made available on the official website for the new stadium, the clubs have now confirmed that the new adapted plans have been put forward to the City Council. It reads as follows:

“AC Milan and FC Internazionale Milano today filed the integration of the feasibility study and the new economic and financial plan for the enhancement project of the San Siro area.

“The project involves the construction of a new stadium with the highest international standards and the refurbishment of the current Giuseppe Meazza facility, with the creation of a modern, sustainable Sports and Entertainment District for the benefit of citizens.

“In particular, in the new feasibility study the Clubs confirm the predominantly sporting, recreational and cultural vocation of the district. Many of the sports activities envisaged here, located outdoors or inside redeveloped spaces, will be free or agreed with the Municipality.

“Citizens will thus be able to enjoy the San Siro district and a pedestrian area of approximately 220,000 square meters all year round, with public green spaces doubled from 56,000 to 106,000 square meters.

“The Club’s proposal provides for the maintenance of iconic elements of the current Meazza facility and their re-purposing within the new district.

“Finally, a significant reduction in ancillary volumes is confirmed compared to the initial proposal, for a total of 145 thousand sq m of SL, equivalent to a building index of 0.51 sq/m.

“The Council Resolution had already recognised the public interest in the proposal presented by the Clubs, subjecting it to certain conditions that have been acknowledged and accepted in the supplementary documentation filed today.

“Today’s one represents a technical step necessary for the conclusion of the procedure relating to the declaration of public interest. As foreseen by the same Resolution, the documentation registered today, the result of several months of work, will be subject to a verification of technical compliance by the municipal offices. Following this investigation, the City Council will be able to confirm the public interest.

“The Clubs will therefore proceed to prepare over the next few months the final project (which involves a significant cost) necessary for the final approval of the project, or the declaration of public utility: the Clubs will continue to work with the utmost effort with the Municipality of Milan , the Lombardy Region and the other institutions involved to reach this ambitious goal.

“AC Milan and FC Internazionale Milano confirm their desire, despite the current difficult context, to launch a project of excellence in Milan, which will generate between 3,000 and 3,500 new jobs, improve an important urban area of the city, and will represent an extraordinary opportunity to relaunch for the City of Milan and for Italian football.”
