GdS: ‘Air of divorce’ – Milan seek right-back reset with experienced duo tipped to leave

AC Milan are leaning towards allowing both Davide Calabria and Alessandro Florenzi to leave on free transfers at the end of the season, a report claims.

We may only be in mid-November, but the time is approaching when the management must begin to make calls on which players should be here for next season and perhaps more importantly who should not.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport report today, there is ‘an air of divorce’ regarding Calabria and Florenzi, both of whom are only under contract until the end of the current season, therefore 30 June 2025.

It would certainly be a statement if the Rossoneri were to decide to let both walk given their contributions in recent years. The former is the club captain and an academy graduate, while the latter has shown his versatility by filling in multiple positions.

The issue however is two-fold: firstly there is a lack of physical reliability shown from both players. Florenzi has had three surgeries in three years since arriving on an initial loan, while Calabria continues to miss stretches of games consistently too.

Allowing both to depart would certainly complicate things from a squad list perspective though, given one came through the youth sector and the other qualifies as a homegrown player.

A player like Gabriele Zappa could arrive to help, with summer signing Emerson Royal seemingly having the starting spot locked down.

  1. The best thing to do is set them both free by January, we already have Terraciano as Emerson Royal’s cover, then we definitely need to fill the space they leave taking into consideration the Italian Quota, Calabria honestly has refused to improve, has refused to gain muscle mass , he is easily bullied on the ball, and Florenzi cannot be relied on in terms of fitness and pace…

  2. Ship Calabria out in Jan but keep Florenzi until he has to take to the pitch in a wheelchair. He could do a job in one of those things – especially if it’s motorized.

  3. I’m not so sure we want to get rid of either or both. What about this funny back 3 we’ve tried?

I like Calabria’s brain and calming influence on the club – we’re missing experienced leaders on the field, except maybe Magic Mike. So Calabria is clearly our best leader in the squad. But I don’t like how easily he’s getting beat 1v1 these days. Maybe we can stick him at RCB in a back 3 and do more of that? Or try him as a 6 in midfield? We don’t gain much by letting him go, except more elbow room on the bench, because of the homegrown quotas.

The same might be said of Florenzi, except he also adds such a variety of skills. I’d literally try him on the field at ANY position and know that he’d do a good job, not necessarily a great job. So he’s wonderful depth to have, and homegrown. Yes, I’d rather have somebody better starting at every position, but he’s a suitable backup at LB/RB/CB/midfield/wing and I bet he’d even do OK as a false 9 if we had to do it. And I think he’s better than Terraciano as a backup to Theo.
