Allegri dismisses idea of being leading Scudetto candidates: “Milan are favourites”

By Oliver Fisher -

The mind games from rival managers has begun as Juventus boss Max Allegri has insisted that AC Milan are the favourites to win the league title.

During the 2021-22 campaign, Stefano Pioli’s side somewhat upset the odds by going all the way and ending the 11-year wait for the Scudetto. It was a three-horse race involving Milan, Inter and Napoli for most of the season but the latter than fell away.

The Rossoneri face a challenging upcoming season because the pressure will be on Pioli’s men to try and defend their league title – like city rivals Inter failed to do last season – while also going further in the Champions League and possibly targeting the Coppa Italia too.

Allegri was asked about the possibility that his side might be considered as the favourites to win the league after two years watching Inter and Milan celebrate, something that he dismissed because of last season’s results and the mercato business so far.

“We cannot be favorites for the Scudetto, the results that have been achieved say so. Milan are favourites on paper because they are the reigning champions, Inter have strengthened a lot and we just have to think about improving the points total from last year and working in silence,” he said (via MilanNews).

“There are eight teams who will fight for the title, the places in the Champions League, in the Europa League and in the Conference, and one will stay at home: they are Milan, Inter, Juve, Roma, Napoli, Lazio, Atalanta and Fiorentina.”
