CorSport: Allegri reverts to three-man defence after failed experiment – the added piece

Massimiliano Allegri seems to be ready to confine the 4-3-3 used against Udinese to being a failed one-game experiment.

Allegri tried to reshape his Milan side in order to fix the attacking department, but it did not work. The 3-0 home defeat against the Zebre may not have been due solely to a mistake in the formation, yet it certainly did expose those familiar flaws in transition that were prevalent in recent seasons.

Back to go forward

As Corriere dello Sport (via MilanPress) report this morning morning, Allegri is leaning toward returning to the comfort blanket of the 3-5-2 formation from the match against Hellas Verona onwards.

It’s highly likely that Matteo Gabbia will also start against the Gialloblù, reforming the defensive trio that brought Allegri so much success at the start of the season. The Italian has recovered after he underwent surgery on a hernia a few weeks ago.

Meanwhile, the Rossoneri will rest today, having also had yesterday afternoon’s session cancelled because of how well the team did in the morning session. The return to Milanello is therefore scheduled for tomorrow, when preparations for Sunday will continue.

Milan will travel to face a Verona side that are almost certainly going to be relegated and have the second-worst defence in the league. So, regardless of system, if the Rossoneri are unable to break down their next opponents the warning bells will become very loud sirens.

    1. 343 would be great but I’m not sure the midfield will be strong enough defensively and retain possession well enough to switch.
