Ambrosini believes Inter are ‘superior’ to Scudetto rivals but ‘can’t leave Milan out’

Massimo Ambrosini believes that AC Milan cannot be counted out of the Scudetto race, despite dropping points recently.

Milan have taken just two points from their last two games, against the teams in 17th and 18th in the table. Yet, the gap to Inter in first place is just three points, by virtue of the fact that they twice let a lead slip against Napoli in last night’s big game.

So, the Rossoneri remain within striking distance of their city rivals. Since last season, Inter have not won any of their 13 matches against Napoli, Milan and Juventus across all competitions (D6, L7), which has proved to be a real stumbling block for them in terms of proving their credentials.

Ambrosini: Inter are ‘superior’

Ambrosini spoke to DAZN after the game between Inter and Napoli at San Siro last night, offering his thoughts on how he thinks the Scudetto battle might end up playing out.

“There’s no doubt that Inter have a problem in these matches; they’ve had too many matches now to dismiss it as a coincidence. For me, Inter, in terms of squad and quality of play, are superior to the others, and we need to understand why they can’t show it in these matches,” he said (via MilanNews).

“I can’t leave Milan out [of the title race], because the Champions League starts again now, and that will weigh heavily. Inter and Napoli are the strongest, but the Champions League postpones the season; Milan can’t be left out.”

  1. Both Inter and Napoli will be knocked out in the UCL soon and will focus all their energy on the Scudetto race; one of them IMO will win it in the end. At the start of the season I overestimated Milan’s strength. I thought no Euro football and Allegri’s experience would be a powerful weapon, but in all likehood it is not enough.

    1. Surprising hearing that from you.

Inter, even if they lose to Arsenal and Dortmund, would have to play 2 more games in the knockout rounds.
Last year, that’s where Milan’s 2nd half of the season unraveled due to too many games and zero rest.

If Inter get through there and push on to the round of 16 or quarterfinals, they’ll be exhausted by the time March comes around.

You better hope that Inter avoid falling below 8th place in the UCL, or their schedule will become a nightmare.

      1. Milan last season had a thin squad. Inter’s issue is only the RWB position. In the other positions there are good rotation options, so having to play some extra games is not a big thing.
Chivu hasn’t learnt yet how to win vs big teams, so the most we can reach in the UCL is the last 16.
Whatever happens in the UCL, if you are hoping that Inter (or Napoli for that matter) will get exhausted, you will get disappointed.

        1. Inter should be among the favorites for CL semis. They started the campaign very well and have been finalist twice in the last 4 or 5 editions.

Why not push for better than quickly getting knocked out to concentrate on winning the Scudetto? It’d serve inter well though while failing to win the scudetto too!

I however see this rather poor mentality in Italian football too often. Clubs representing the nation in Europe should play to win to a good extent. That will give you a slight advantage of doing better.

Why wouldn’t you want to miss out on qualifying to the CL if you’ll be there hoping to be knocked out. Targeting the quick easy economic again alone is a bit unfair to your FA. Besides the gap between the Real Madrids and the underdogs is no longer that wide.

    2. i mean it still is. inter are much more likely but this january will decide everything especially for inter milan.2 draws and milan win 2 then its automatically back to us and we still have a head to head we can win

      1. I remember some people here arguing in the summer that Allegri would not be the right choice for Milan because his playing style has been figured out and is largely outdated.
I am starting to get this vibe that that prediction was right and Allegri can’t win a Scudetto again at this point in career. In the last 5 Serie A games Milan have 3 draws against weak teams. Even the winning ability vs direct rivals might have been corroded to some degree as suggested by Napoli’s convincing win in the Super Cup.
That being said, I am sure Milan will comfortably get a top 4 spot, which provides UCL money for a better transfer window in the summer. It is an improvement from the last season and a step in the right direction, so Allegri’s work should not be undervalued though.

        1. Exactly because we know Max very well. He’s frustrating to have. Imagine being 2 points off the top and people are concerned of finishing in the top 4. Or even when we were on top of the table people not sure of finding consistency with his methods. Max has been my biggest fear in football. I was helpless after learning about his comeback. I less look forward to Milan games with his football.

I predict Milan Juve Roma Como fighting out for the last two CL spots while Napoli and Inter fighting for the scudetto and I’ll be very happy with a top 4 finish with Maxs playing style and overly cautious mentality

  2. this is not even about inter or napoli. Whats the use of focusing on our rivals when we cant even win games by our own? alegris tactics can be so useless sometimes. attack more in those smaller games. trust your quality that you will outscore small teams. the attacking players seem so confused like they dont know what to do.

the leao experiment as a striker is good and i think it has given him a new edge in terms of understanding that he has to finish more but switch it up sometimes and let him run on the wings were he can be devastating. imaging switching tactics in the game from 352 to 343 and back. it could be that simple.

Puli is still our best player by far in terms of what he brings to the team and decisiveness. fulkrug will be great in the next few games as he gets up to speed. we need to focus on ourselves rather then worry what inter and napoli are doing. if we win games then we dont have to worry about them.
