ANSA: Serie A expected to implement play-off game for title and relegation standoffs

There could be some significant changes made to Serie A ahead of what should be an exciting 2022/23 season. In fact, an interesting proposal was voted through by the Lega council earlier today.

As reported by ANSA (via MilanNews), there will most likely be a play-off game for title and relegation battles. If two teams finish on the same amount of points, head-to-head record and goal difference are two of the current separators.

However, with the new rules, there will be a play-off game if two teams finish with the same amount of points. This will only apply to battles that are for the title or relegation, meaning the old rule will remain in force if two teams are fighting for Europan qualification, for example.

This proposal, as mentioned, was voted through by the Lega Council and the same outcome is expected in the FIGC (Italian Football Federation) council. In other words, a significant change to Serie A is in the pipeline.

  1. Right after Milan wins the title, its not suspicious at all.
“Milan wins, lets change everything”…referee “error” didn´t work.

    1. Serie A did EVERYTHING they could to prevent Milan from winning and still failed. Now they want new weapons to use against Milan. So pathetic.

  2. I would have expected that such significant changes to the leagues rulesets would be decided and forewarned a season or two before its implementation but cant say im surpriced anylonger,

  3. Why do you care

Only applies when teams have same no of points

Next season, while CL should be a priority, the title is ours to lose

Inter is in firesale again. Juve again with bad team and tactics. Roma squad is still too young, Lazio is mediocre.

To be honest Serie A is slowly becoming farmers league

  4. What if three teams finish with the same points? A little CL-like group? The italians never cease to amaze me with their bad and mafia-like decisions.
