Athletic: How Milan changed tactically to beat Tottenham – interactive graphic

AC Milan clinched their spot in the Champions League quarter-finals thanks to a 1-0 win on aggregate against Tottenham. In the second leg, the Rossoneri defended brilliantly and the tactics were clear.

Over two legs, Tottenham barely created any chances against Milan and their first proper one in the second leg came in the 93rd minute. On their website, The Athletic (via @M4rkPhilips on Twitter) have analysed Milan’s tactical success on the night.

The Roossoneri defended with a 5-4-1 shape, which allowed the three centre-backs to stay close and essentially man-mark the Tottenham front three. This was crucial to the clean sheet and the defenders did tremendously well.

When in possession, Milan changed their form to a 4-3-3 of sorts, with the right-centreback (Kalulu) pushing wide. Leao moved closer to Giroud and this also opened up space for Theo on the left.
