The Athletic: West Ham will pay an initial €43m for Paqueta – Milan’s situation

By Isak Möller -

Lucas Paqueta will undergo his medical tests for West Ham tomorrow and although he has left his AC Milan experience behind, the Rossoneri are following the situation closely. The reason, of course, being the resale clause.

According to The Athletic, West Ham have agreed to pay €43m to Lyon up front, while there will be an additional €17m in bonuses. It’s a significant investment even for Premier League side and it will be interesting to see how Paqueta will get on.

Milan, as we know, included a 15% resale clause when they sold the playmaker to Lyon back in 2020. The clause concerns the profit made by Lyon, i.e what they are selling Paqueta for vs. what they paid to sign him (€23m in this case, excluding bonuses).

Milan are guaranteed a fee of €3.45m, therefore, and it remains to be understood if the clause also is valid for the bonuses. If that is the case, then the Rossoneri could collect a total of €6m from Paqueta’s move to West Ham.

  1. Of course they pay the clause on bonuses! Otherwise any deal with a sell on clause would be 90% of the money after one appearance

  2. It has to be explicitly written into the contract. Otherwise you will see loopholes eg look at the Rebic/Silva swap deal, between us and Eintracht we really screwed over Fiorentina.
