Baldursson on AC Milan Women’s star Thorsvaldottir: “She is a complete player”

By Steph Insixiengmay -

Since her arrival at AC Milan in January, Berglind Björg Thorsvaldottir has endeared herself to the Rossoneri faithful with her impressive performances. The fantastic forward has scored a total of five goals in five games.

Recently, Ívan Guðjón Baldursson, the editor of Fótbolti.net, gave an interview to Radio Rossonera about Berglind.

Below is a transcript of the interview, translated from Italian to English.

What kind of player is Berglind and what is her favorite position on the field?

“She is a complete player, very intelligent, and in attack, she can either be the first or second striker. Of course, she prefers to be the main striker, because it’s where she has the most chances to score.”

What are her strengths and what aspects [of her game] should she improve upon?

“She is very diligent, good at positioning herself, she makes smart movements off the ball, and she knows when to change lanes in attack, in order to make movements that free up her companions. I don’t think there are aspects of her game that she is really phenomenal at, but there is no side of her game that is bad.”

An interesting aspect of Berglind is that she has already been to Italy and played with Verona, but it was not a very good experience, and in Iceland, the story had fairly big reverberations [and impacted how people viewed the league].

“Yes, she was one of two players from the Icelandic national team who went to play at Verona, but they had found a different situation from what they expected, which was also due to the fact that women’s football [in Italy] was just beginning at the time. Now, the women’s movement has grown and the reality of Milan is very different from that of Verona, though she had scored a few goals there.”

Berglind has said that her time in Italy will last until the end of the season, then she’ll return to Iceland to play in the league there, and it is not the first time she’s done this. Is this a recurring thing?

“I would say yes, but also because she is not the only one doing this. Here, the football season starts in May and ends in October, so the season is much shorter. So there are many athletes who go abroad to keep fit and to gain experience, and then they return.”

So is she really attached to her homeland?

“Yes, but then those who break through abroad are less likely to come back home.”

And this could be interesting because, from the beginning, the fans have asked if she could stay with us for a while longer. Could there be an open door for this possibility?

“Good question, maybe you should ask her! But I think there is a possibility. We could convince her if the conditions are right.”

Her impact on the Italian league and on the AC Milan Women has been incredible, and maybe no one expected this. Do you think this is the real Berglind?

“She has always scored many goals, except in the national team, where she often plays out of position because there are other girls who play in her preferred role. However, I think that this year that she can maintain a good form, and also because she has scored more goals in Italy, while here in Iceland she only scores one goal per game.”
