Tuttosport: Bologna saga produces Napoli selection nightmare – Fonseca’s current plan

AC Milan’s task against the Serie A leaders Napoli has become a lot more complicated, and it is because of the fact the Bologna game will not be played today.

As Tuttosport (via MilanNews) reports this morning, the decision to postpone Bologna-Milan to a date to be determined means Paulo Fonseca has granted a day of rest to his boys who will return to training tomorrow at Milanello to begin preparing for Tuesday’s match against Napoli at San Siro.

For this match, Milan will have to do without Theo Hernandez and Tijjani Reijnders who were due to serve their suspension against Bologna, but after the postponement of the match they will be forced to miss the Napoli game.

Fonseca has some doubts about the team that he will pick to face Antonio Conte’s side, and in particular about who will replace the two suspended players. To take the place of the Frenchman on the left side it is a battle between Filippo Terracciano and Davide Calabria, who is back from injury.

In the middle of the field, where Reijnders will be missing, competing for a starting spot alongside the now immovable Youssouf Fofana are Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Yunus Musah. The other big doubt in the line-up concerns Rafael Leao, who could lose his starting spot to Noah Okafor.

  1. First Calabria was rushed back from injury just to get injuried again and now after just returning from injury again he’s about be deployed out of position. Are they really that desperate to justify the waste that Emerson was.

  2. Why not just try a 3-4-3 formation with
    Tomori Gabbia Pavlovic
    Royal Fofana RLC Musah
    Pulisic Morata Leoa
With Pulisic drifting in to form a 3412 to provide the needed creativity to connect the midfield and attack

  3. Emerson – Gabbia – Tomori – Terracciano (or maybe Pavlovic)
    Fofana – RLC
Chuk – Pulisic – Leao (or Okafor if Leao doesnt show any sign of teamspirit in this weeks training sessions)
    Morata
tbh i dont really see the drama to be without Theo and Reijnders. just puts the favourite stamp (+pressure) on Napoli while we are still having a strong team available. not much left to come from the bench, but with a week rest, they should all be ready for 90 minutes.

    1. It shows only that we have players that are not capable that’s killing the team like tomori and Loftus cheek other players are Good to go.

  4. Pavlovic should replace Theo at left back and Musah replacing Reinjders. My concern is that Leao needs to be replaced by Okafor who is in form.

Front 4 should be Okafor, Pulisic, Chukwueze and Morata.

  5. Play Calabria or Jimenez. Musha in the middle. With Chuk Puli Okafor. I don’t mind who starts up to because non of them can score a goal. Just play Jovic ..,won’t make a difference ..or maybe it will ,as he’s never gone 3 matches without scoring.

  6. Absence of Theo and Reijnders may be mitigated if the team sits deeper and closes down the spaces. You need fast outlets on the counter. Leao/Puli/Chuk up front and hunker down the defense with RLC, Musah and Fofana.

Not like we have an abundance of midfield options.

  7. why sitting deep? we have currently Chuk and Okafor in form to complement an already strong attack. be afraid of a team that beat Lecce 1-0 at home? i prefer to believe in our strength and build on confidence. at this point i really like having Theo and Reijnders suspended against Napoli, creating this nice underdog fairytale that takes away pressure, while odds never lie
