MN: Cakir, Siebert and more – the major incidents to go against Milan in Europe

By Euan Burns -

The sending off of Fikayo Tomori against Chelsea on Tuesday night was just another example of refereeing decisions in Europe going against AC Milan, a report claims.

As has been reported by Milan News, there are at least five instances of refereeing decisions going against Milan in European competition in recent years.

It has been a long road to get Milan back to regular European competition participation and upon arriving, the refereeing standard has proved to be very poor.

It seemed to start with a dive from Danny Welbeck in the 2018 Europa League tie against Arsenal which led to a Round of 16 knockout. In the same tournament in 2021, Franck Kessie had a goal ruled out for a seemingly mystical handball against Manchester United.

Moving onto the Champions League, there was the second yellow card handed to Kessie in a group game against Atletico Madrid which Milan were dominating and leading. It was a harsh decision by Cuneyt Cekir, but it didn’t stop there.

In stoppage time, a penalty was given for a Pierre Kalulu handball which was actually a handball by Thomas Lemar. Luis Suarez scored the penalty and Milan were beaten.

A week later, Milan were at the Estadio Do Dragao to play Porto and they were denied a clear penalty when Matheus Uribe had handled the ball. Then, Luis Diaz scored after a clear foul by Mehdi Taremi in the build-up which Felix Brych had missed.

The latest instalment is of course the sending off of Tomori against Chelsea on Tuesday night by Daniel Siebert.

  1. I remember plenty of times Barcelona only beat us because Puyol or Xavi was flopping around like a seal in the penalty box. Another classic ref cock up last night to add to the collection

  2. does anyone remember a penalty awarded to Barca, because of a pinch and ball was out of play. crooked UEFA REFS what ACM done for them, One may wonder why.

  3. Did you remember there was a barcelona (uefalona) corner kick in which Puyol hugged Nesta and brought him down like it was a Judo match and then the referee gifted a penalty kick for barcelona (uefalona) due to it?

    1. And the best part was that the so-called foul happened before the corner kick was even given so there is no possible way it should have been a penalty.
