Calabria optimistic but humble after first friendly: “All part of the journey” – video

By Isak Möller -

After the friendly clash between AC Milan and Rapid Wien last night, the captain Davide Calabria spoke to the media and shared his thoughts on the first test. Indeed, he touched on Paulo Fonseca’s tactics and the journey ahead.

The game ended 1-1 after a late equaliser from the Austrian side, following Alessandro Florenzi’s opener in the second half. In fairness, though, a draw was a very fair result considering the chances that the home side had.

Speaking to MilanTV after the game (see video below), Calabria shared his thoughts on the first test under Fonseca and what they need to improve. As one would expect, he focused a lot on the journey ahead and that it will take time to adopt all of the new concepts.

On the game…

“We’re in the preparation phase and we have had a lot of training sessions, so it’s only normal to be a bit fatigued in-game. We have been practising a lot and obviously, we still have a lot to work on as well as study and learn.

“It’s all part of the journey, obviously we did some things better than others and we have to improve. Some moves didn’t go our way but we are just at the beginning and have to improve a lot.”

On the new tactics…

“There are some new concepts to learn in training, which we still have to process in order to fully master them and become spontaneous in games. This is important because you don’t have a lot of time to think and even communicate with your teammates.

“These moments, these games and minutes played are very important, even with some teammates who haven’t been playing with us for long, the younger ones, so it’s just part of the journey. We have to quickly learn the new methods.”

On the US pre-season tour…

“We’ll play against some of the best teams in the world. We’re ready and eager to head to the US for a new experience which always gives us that first-time feeling. It will be an interesting trip, also to see how we adapt to the manager and all the new concepts that are gradually sinking in.”

On Morata…

“Morata is a champion, who has played for some big clubs and has an incredible career. He’s still showing his worth today, he’s a top player who just won the Euros. I know he will be of great help to us immediately, we can’t wait to welcome him. I spoke to him a few days ago and I hope he arrives as soon as possible.”
