AC Milan defender Davide Calabria has insisted that he is ‘really proud’ of the way he and his team-mates fought for the Scudetto and won it.
The equation was simple in the end going into the final game of the season away against Sassuolo at the Mapei Stadium as Stefano Pioli’s side knew that avoiding defeat was enough to win the league for a 19th time.
However, few could have predicted the emphatic manner with which the team despatched of Sassuolo as they scored three goals in the first half to ensure that the party could start early.
Rafael Leao got three assists in the first half and two were for Olivier Giroud as he quickly fired Milan into a two-goal lead after several glorious opportunities, and then a third goal from Franck Kessie before the interval ensured the second half would be smooth sailing.
Calabria spoke to Milan TV after the Scudetto award ceremony at Mapei Stadium, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.
What emotions do you feel? “A great feeling, a lot of stuff. We did a fantastic job, we deserve it all and I’m really proud of this team.”
On the path: “We never had any doubts about this match, we were very confident. We have collected the work done so far.”
Is there a mess in the dressing room? “Normal, as it should be. Now we will clean up a bit, that’s right. A crazy season, I’m really happy for this team.”
Key point of the season? “For me we have believed in it since the beginning of the year, from the first minute into the training camp. It is also thanks to the coach. We have believed in it until now, it is right that we took this medal home.”
Calabria also spoke to DAZN after the game with a big smile on his face. As an academy graduate and boyhood fan of the club, there is no doubting that this means that little bit more to him.
On the Scudetto: “In my heart there is everything. We have made many sacrifices, the last few years have been difficult. We have reaped what we have sown.”
On the role of the full-back: “I’m not limited to playing on the wing. The coach allowed me and Theo to play free. We created this way of playing that is annoying for the opponents. I was born a midfielder, so I quickly got used to playing infield.
On the group: “This group is fantastic, we did everything we could do, maybe more. It is the reward for what we have done. I do not look at others, I am proud of this team.”
On the best player in the team: “The group, without the group we wouldn’t have won. Leao has grown a lot, he is a different player. He must continue like this.”
