Calhanoglu congratulates Milan and preaches importance of ‘respect’ after derby

By Oliver Fisher -

Hakan Calhanoglu congratulated his former side AC Milan for reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League and revealed that he still has respect for the management.

Calhanoglu has often been the subject of ridicule given that he missed out on the Scudetto with Milan in 2020-21 as Inter pipped the Rossoneri to the title, and he then chose to cross the city divide and join the blue half of the city but became an onlooker as Milan won it last season.

However, the Turkey international was the one smiling last night as Inter racked up their fourth derby win in a row, and this time it was also enough to book a place in the final of the Champions League in Istanbul next month.

Calhanoglu spoke to Mediaset after the game to reflect on a memorable night for him and his team-mates, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

“Congratulations to Milan: they too did a good job. It was a difficult game. We did a good job. I’m very happy,” he said.

“Derbies are always tough, unfortunately for me even more. But the past is the past. Always shooting is not good. I get along with all my former team-mates, there is respect for Maldini and Massara. Ricky is my neighbour and we always see each other. The important thing is that there is respect.”

  1. Respect? The man who has shown zero of that to Milan since leaving and was celebrating his goal against Milan like he just won the scudetto (which he never did btw and never will)?

I guess he means respect in on way only: respect towards him.

    1. Oh no, a footballer celebrated a goal.

People need to learn to let go. Hakan got more than he deserved already last year. If he’s trying to burry the hatched, good for him.

At the end of the day it’s sport, not war.

      1. “Oh no, a footballer celebrated a goal.”

It’s how he did it. You can handle those situations with class (see e.g. Bonaventura scoring against his former teams) or you can rub it in against the face of your former fans. If you fail to notice/understand the difference, fine by me. The **** do I care. 😀

        1. You dodged the broad point i was making, and instead are focusing on a small nuance of my post.

He is free to celebrate how he wants. Some petty fans were offended, as is also their right. The fans and the team “got him back” for it.

My point is it is over now. Score is even. Move on.

    2. He apologized to the curva last night..not sure if anyone caught that. It was before taking a corner. If he got therapy for scoring against us then It is what it is. But he was very good when he played for us. I always wondered how our team would have turned out if we still had him

      1. If we still have Hakan and Suso ot even Jack, we would still be more comfortable than the likes of Diaz and Messias in our lineup
