Capello believes De Ketelaere plays at a ‘slower pace’ and is currently ‘shy’

By Oliver Fisher -

Former AC Milan head coach Fabio Capello has offered an explanation as to why Charles De Ketelaere can’t seem to get going at the moment.

De Ketelaere is experiencing a difficult moment have not yet managed to take flight since joining the Rossoneri over the summer from Club Brugge for a fee of over €30m and after an 18-goal season with the Belgian champions.

Italian football is not Belgian football and the pressures are different, while De Ketelaere has the full support of Milan starting with the management and extending to the fans. They believe that there is plenty of talent and he is only 21 years of age, with a period of adaptation needed similar to the one Rafael Leão and Sandro Tonali had after struggled upon their arrival.

Capello spoke during a segment on Sky Italia and he was asked about De Ketelaere’s early struggles since his move from Belgium, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

“I see in him a great player, with great quality and great vision of the game. Currently he plays at a slower pace than his team-mates. I have followed him the past and when he had the ball he did things that he no longer does, at the moment he is shy,” he said.

“It is true that he is returning from injury, but he is missing something. He has excellent qualities to become an important player, but now I think it is more a moral question to find it.”

  1. It’s all mental. He needs to build confidence and almost a defiance which all the top players have. Do you think Haaland doubts himself or plays against people he thinks are better than him? Never, he wants to be the best, he has told himself nobody can stop him, he believes he will succeed wholeheartedly. This is what CDK is missing. If CDK had this mentality he’d be world class. The skills and size are there. He needs more speed and more mental strength so hopefully Pioli can get these up to par and we’ll have a worldbeater on our hands.

  2. I believe that he is a great talent, but he is mentally weak,he doesn’t possess great personality, kvaraskhelia for example is having his first season in serie A and he is doing excellent things.. when you want to become a champion, you need self believe, show your qualities..he needs to free his mind & play with needed ruthlessness.. FORZA MILAN..

    1. Regarding Kvaradona vs CDK though… Kvara arrived to Napoli with a small fee and low expectations. CDK with a huge sum (for Milan) and was compared to Kaká already before playing a single minute.

Guess who had more pressure on him? CDK also basically missed the whole preseason so he didn’t have that luxury of getting to know his teammates.

  3. When i watch CDK i see a lot of Sergej Milinkovic Savic in him. They got the same build, But CDK is faster and also doesn’t mind running. He is very good in the defensive phase, has SMS vision when he is passing from deep, makes those late runs in the box and can score.
Maybe not this year but if Pioli decides to play with 3 midfielders CDK might be great as a mezzala
