Capello certain about Milan’s UCL adventure: “Penalized by the referees”

By Isak Möller -

Thanks to their win away at Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, AC Milan are still alive in the Champions League and could advance to the next stage with a win against Liverpool. Something they deserve, argues Fabio Capello.

It was clear for everyone to see that the referee made a huge mistake in the first leg between Milan and Atletico Madrid, sending off Franck Kessie. Then, in injury time, VAR failed to intervene despite a non-existent penalty.

Speaking to Gazzetta Dello Sport (via MilanNews), Fabio Capello shared his thoughts on Milan’s Champions League adventure thus far. He agreed that the refereed penalized the Rossoneri but also stated that it cannot be used as an excuse.

“In Europe, they were penalized by the referees but that shouldn’t be an excuse. They have never played as well as in Madrid: there they proved to be a team with technique, quality, conviction and will. If they did this only at the end, it’s because there is maturation taking place.

“They are like a bottle of wine: it has been uncorked, now they can start drinking. They have to keep trying, why not? They were practically out and are now back in the running: in a certain respect they have less to lose, they will be able to play without pressure,” he stated.

Milan need to win the final game against Liverpool and the game between Porto and Atletico Madrid has to end in a draw. Alternatively, Atleti could win but only if it’s the same winning margin as the Rossoneri.
