Capello and Fonseca

Capello labels Fonseca’s tactics ‘a waste of time’ in Atalanta-Milan: “The usual mistakes”

Fabio Capello didn’t hold back with the criticism after AC Milan’s 1-2 defeat against Atalanta, stating that Paulo Fonseca got the approach all wrong. Indeed, the fact they had just two shots on target back that up.

Fonseca was furious with the referees after the game, which he made clear in the interviews, but the feeling is that he should have been upset with himself instead. Milan clearly played for a draw after Alvaro Morata’s equaliser and as expected, they were punished.

In his weekly column for Gazzetta dello Sport, the former manager Fabio Capello discusses Milan’s errors in the game and the approach of Fonseca. He didn’t hold back on the criticism, stating that it was ‘a waste of time’ by the Rossoneri as they often just gave the ball to Mike Maignan.

“What can we say about Fonseca’s team? They did little, too little, especially after Pulisic’s injury. And not even because of Loftus-Cheek, who wasn’t poor by any means. It seems to me that it was the wrong set-up for the game.

“Maignan, the goalkeeper, played more balls than many of his teammates. That’s not good. That’s not ball possession, but a waste of time and a symptom of little confidence in their own abilities. In fact, Milan were slow, held back and only shot twice on goal, once at the start with Pulisic and the other on the goal, born from an exceptional acceleration by Leao.

“In the second half, the Rossoneri never troubled Carnesecchi and when there was the possibility of setting up Leao vertically, they always went back. You can’t play like that. Then there are the usual mistakes, even by individuals: we talked about Theo, but on Lookman’s goal that decided the match, Emerson Royal made a big mistake.

“The Brazilian should be told an old football saying: in the penalty area – especially on corners and free kicks – you look at the man, not the ball, even if you mark in a zone. And instead, Lookman appears from behind and fools Maignan.

“This defeat is heavy for Milan. It’s not me who says it, it’s the standings. Fonseca is now 12 points behind Gasperini, but more than the distance from the top, it’s the distance from the Champions League zone that’s worrying.

“It’s easy to repeat that it’s still early, but by saying it’s early too much, it becomes too late. Especially if Serie A  won’t have five teams for the competition next season,” he writes.

Now 12 points behind league leaders Atalanta, it’s clear that the Scudetto hopes have been put to bed and the Champions League isn’t even a certainty either. Something needs to happen in January, therefore, whether that be a new manager or some signings.

  1. I agree with every words.Capelo explain everything. We are sucks with Fonseca. He must go at monday or be too late not for only for season. This guy can lead only small teams.
We need top couch not Lepetegui,Fonseca etc
Watching those Milan is hard.Nothing there exept goals behind Maignan.

    1. No top coach is or was available, that’s why they went with Fonseca. It’s clear Fonseca isn’t a top coach, but he’s not terrible either. Even if he’s replaced, the problems with the squad remain – the full backs are awful, then there’s the balance in midfield.

      1. Conte was available. As were others. Fonseca was chosen by an algorithm. The same algorithm who chose musah over many qualified serie A midfielders both young and in their prime. This is all one problem. The management. They chose this clown and then bought him the players he “wanted”. They gave someone the keys who was unworthy and unqualified and they wrecked the car.
We will be in this position until somone in Gerry’s crew takes responsibility (which will not happen)

      2. Once more it’s either you’re hard headed or just like to ignore facts on purpose….what do u mean no top.coach was available? Many were going to be available in the summer…Conte, Slot, Sarri, Klopp, Poch, Flick. We went cheap that ‘s what happened.

      3. We (and I specifically) gave you countless examples of coaches who were available between june 2024 and some of whom might be still available. All these coaches have either a far better resume than Fonseca’s and Lopetegui’s or are young with a promising style of play.
The fact that you bring this argument yet again either means that you don’t bother reading who is replying to you or that you’re stuck in you lane of thinking and decided that whatever you say is true even if proven otherwise.

      4. i don’t know Top coach you mean, but better coach than Fonseca/ Lopetegui is there to pick Conte, Tuchel, Sarri, Klopp, Slot, Poch, Flick, Mou.. even atm Gattuso/ Seedorf/ Pippo can do better than this Fonseca

      5. Fellas it’s been said when Fozi was announced as the new manager.
The ACM executives should be held accountable they all signed off on him. This is were Milan’s deficiency lies.
The fish rots from the head people! No trophies this season Cardinale…..again!
What is on the horizon ?

  2. Absolutely correct….he is spot on. a coach with small mentality always making excuses while his team have neither a game plan or identity….pioli looks like kloop in front of fonseca….plz go and coach a team who fights for relegation….this entire blame falls on management…..

  3. if you talk about scudetto one more time, this talk should have ended in october, talk about europa league and conference league

  4. if you talk about scudetto one more freaking time, this talk should have ended in october, talk about europa league and conference league

  5. We are where we should be. We wouldn’t get anything from this team this year.
The coach is inhabile. He plays to get a draw like in the juventus game. This time he got what he deserved.

  6. “It’s easy to repeat that it’s still early, but by saying it’s early too much, it becomes too late. Especially if Serie A won’t have five teams for the competition next season,”
This sums it up perfectly for me.
At some point we have to do some changes if we want the situation to change.

  7. “Too early”? LOL, the season officially ended. Not a single real Milan fan cares about whether we’ll participate in Europa League or Conference League. And everyone knows we’ll get nothing from the tournaments, because there we’ll have to face teams like Atalanta and draws will only takes us to extra-time and penalties. We have one of the worst coaches and managements in Europe, the players are depressed and want out and the fans are apathetic rather than angry. It’s a recipe for mediocrity and it’s exactly what Cardinale set up this club to become. If you don’t vent your feelings toward him, might as well not touch on all the other subjects, because they are simply results from his ridiculous management of the club.

  8. ‘Maignan, the goalkeeper, played more balls than many of his teammates.‘

Lol. This is exactly what I thought. Is he our new playmaker or something? Enough with this possesion-build-from-the-back kind of balderdash. When your squad wasn’t built with that DNA.

  9. Losing to Atalanta is no disgrace.
But giving up and wasting time and faking injury is embarrassing and disgusting.

Just read Gasparini’s comments after the game.
This manager has had more than enough time and opportunities, he is a MAASIVE FAILURE!

We need someone competent in now, someone who will demand reinforcements in January, the right ones.

No more yes men you cowardly bunch of Redturds.

As always it goes back to Maldini sacking, there was someone with the clubs best interest at heart who was rightly demanding more.
Everything about this project is a result of this mentality by ownership.

We most likely will see a disintegration of the team now.

I hope all the deranged, stubborn and uninformed redbird fans on this blog will go back to supporting NFL or wherever they come from.
This situation has been building for a long time and it is entirely the fault of the owner and his minions

      1. They are RedBird fans more than Milan fans.
        Or they’re hired staffs, possibly

Someone with Milan jersey in profile pic says: “They will fix the mistakes in winter break.” haha

  10. RedBird takes one step forward then two steps back, all the way to 7th in the standings… Then stands by and reaffirms faith in… “this”

Ive always judged them based on their merits, but outside of Reijnders, Puli, Fofana, and establishing Futuro everything else they have done has inhibited this club from any kind of growth.

  11. Mr Fonseca his not our problem our tactics is Good only that we are short of players we need to make solid signing that’s solutions to the problem.

  12. Acmilan should try and sell out Loftus cheek is a waste of time he is not contributing to the team rather is our major issues in the attacking midfield and also defensive midfield that’s why Acmilan needs Warren Bondo to support Fofana then we sign an attacking midfield and leao deputy

  13. All I know is that the management team has more pain than do. They are all failures and am happy for this result. I told my colleagues Milan will lose and it happened.
And am also happy to see CDK scoring and celebrating it.
As I said before he was sold that We sold out jewel away and he came to hurt u.
From the beginning of every game it’s obviously clear that Milan coach wants draw reason musah is starting and even when Pulisic was injured he brought cheek instead of attacking. I said it before that the season is over
