Capello says Pioli must eliminate two-faced Milan: “They have great potential”

By Isak Möller -

Fabio Capello was interviewed by a newspaper following the Europa League Round of 16 draw, with three Italian teams still in the competition. AC Milan will face Slavia Praha but the legendary manager warned that the Rossoneri can never be certain.

Milan won the first leg of the Europe League knockout phase playoff against Stade Rennes by three goals to nil. Therefore, many expected a rather comfortable game in France but instead, the Rossoneri lost the game 3-2 and certainly struggled at times.

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport for this morning’s edition (see photo below), Capello shared his thoughts on the Europa League draw. He also spoke about Milan and their struggles in the defensive phase, urging Stefano Pioli to get rid of the two-faced aspect.

On Milan’s struggles…

“Milan are a puzzle: they have great potential, but you never know which team will take the field. There are two Milans: the confident, dominant and attentive one that beat Rennes 3-0 at San Siro and the uncertain and vulnerable one that conceded three goals in France.”

On the Slavia game…

“It could go south if Milan don’t find the balance they lack. The teams that concede few goals, in addition to having great defenders, have a great tactical balance: the Rossoneri sometimes seem too exposed up front, the midfield struggles and the defence suffers.”

Milan will face Atalanta on Sunday evening and since the Bergamo side are just seven points behind, with a game in hand, the Rossoneri need to win. Pioli spoke to the media at his usual press conference and admitted that it will be a difficult clash against an in-form team.

  1. Maybe it’s because they don’t have a clear identity, a style of play own to them. You know Juve will win 1 nil consistently without fail, Inter bags heaps of goals, and our poor Milan plays excellent one day and lose against a bottom tier team the next game. What is their strategy, what is their style, and because of this the coach is ultimately to blame…

    1. What do you mean Milan don’t have a clear identity? If you don’t understand something, come here and ask, or read articles. But don’t post sh*t out of your tailpipe if you don’t know what the $#&% you’re talking about.

      Milan has a CLEAR identity:
A possession based system designed to outnumber opponent in a space and attack that space. if it’s not there then they try to change the point of attack.

      That’s It.

        1. ^100% !!

Yet they come and argue their points like its gospel! Blows my mind. Common sense: make sure you understand what you are talking about before you post here because you will get called out on it.

This doesn’t sound to me like a team with a clear identity. And I pretty much agree with Capello’s assessment. You cannot be in total control in one game and be totally played off the park in another and say you have an identity. Atleast if you lose we must see a semblance of your style of play. There are games where Milan is completely clueless, amd that is my bone of contention…

        1. Opinion based on something you are witnessing and not comprehending. Milan has been playing since September with the same identity yet you don’t see one.

It may not be an identity you like but that’s not what your post was. Your post was “Milan don’t have a clear identity” and I am calling out on it but there is a clear identity. Might not be one you like or understand…

So, not it’s not gospel. It’s an observation based on 25 games with a clear identity staring you in the face EVERY GAME.

Not sure what you’re getting upset at.
