AC Milan owner Gerry Cardinale has spoken of a ‘long-term commitment’ to Italy after he was granted Italian citizenship.
On Thursday, the news emerged that the Council of Ministers have given the green light to initiate the process to grant Italian citizenship to Cardinale. As specified in the official statement issued by the Council of Ministers, the measure is the result of his ‘strong impetus for solidarity and social inclusion initiatives through sport’.

Now, the founder of the RedBird fund and owner of Milan has released some statements to ANSA where he commented on the news regarding the granting of citizenship.
“I am deeply honoured by the proposal to grant me Italian citizenship and I am very grateful to the Council of Ministers, in particular to the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, and to the Minister of Justice, Carlo Nordio, as well as to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, for their favourable opinion,” he began.
“My roots are in Italy, both on my mother’s and my father’s sides, and I spent every summer of my youth here. My commitment to Italy is deep and long-term, so I am deeply grateful for this recognition.”
With big projects upcoming such as the new stadium to be built with Milan and Inter, Cardinale’s presence in the country might just increase in the coming months.
