CM: Adli could have joined Ajax in the summer – the background

By Oliver Fisher -

Yacine Adli seems to have finally convinced Stefano Pioli that he is ready to have a consistent starting spot, but things could have been a lot different in the summer.

It has been a strange few months so far this season for Adli, who started the season getting some opportunities after a bright preseason but then seemed to vanish in the build-up to Christmas with others preferred.

Now, however, he is firmly back in the fold and has made starts in key games. This is of course something influenced by Ismael Bennacer’s absence at the African Cup of Nations and the fact Tommaso Pobega is out for months yet.

According to what is being reported by Calciomercato.com, Adli has finally gained a spot at Milan thanks to his ‘great spirit of sacrifice’ which includes accepting a deeper-lying midfield role.

During the summer transfer window a number of teams came forward to express an interest in signing him and the most concrete option was Ajax.

However, the former Bordeaux man had already made up his mind: he wants to stay at Milan, work hard to develop his game and eventually earn the trust of Pioli.

Adli spoke to Sky after the win against Empoli and he actually outlined his journey including his willingness to move back in the team to make himself as useful as possible.
