CM: Caldara becomes a problem as Atalanta baulk at €15m clause – Milan’s stance outlined

By Oliver Fisher -

Mattia Caldara has ‘become a problem’ for AC Milan as Atalanta are having doubts about the defender, according to a report.

Calciomercato.com write how La Dea are not be willing to sign the centre-back from Milan on a permanent basis as multiple injuries have kept the 26-year-old away from the field for the best part of two years and this has greatly influenced both the mind and the body of a player once considered a great prospect.

The basis of Atalanta’s decision is both technical and economic, as the €15million figure currently set for the buy-out is too much for the Nerazzurri’s balance sheet, for a player who unfortunately has never managed to find optimal form. Not only that, but La Dea have already recruited a new defender in Bosnia international Anel Ahmedhodžić who would replace Caldara in the squad.

It cannot be excluded that Atalanta could reopen negotiations to aim for a lower price, or ask for an extension of the loan for a other season, but Caldara is not part of Stefano Pioli’s plans and it will be up to Maldini to decide what to do with the defender who still has two more years on his contract with Milan.
