CM: Change of scenery with Atalanta may have been all that De Ketelaere needed

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan loanee Charles De Ketelaere could be set for a significantly better second season in Italy after he made the loan move to Atalanta, a report suggests.

As discussed by Calciomercato.com, De Ketelaere is one of the headline makers during the opening weekend of action in Serie A after he got his first goal since arriving in Italy last summer.

He made 32 appearances for Milan but failed to find the back of the net, which is why he was allowed to join Atalanta on loan. Coming off the bench for his debut against Sassuolo, he scored very quickly with a header and helped his team win the game.

There is reason to think that De Ketelaere could be in for a very good year at Atalanta given he looks happy at the club and there is a much clearer role for him in Gian Piero Gasperini’s system than there is at Milan.

  1. I have been writing for some time that he needed to move away from Pioli. A coach that plays Kessie, RLC (just wait for it) and similar butchers on AMC because he doesn’t know better.

New Paqueta. Milan sells with a loss and the next club triples their money…

    1. Gasperini plays Pasalic at AM, so much for that.

Traditional number 10 is dead anyway, CDK was significantly worse than Brahim and couldn‘t finish 100% chances, he is just not good enough sorry.

      1. You mean the guy that scored 13 and assisted 7 last season in Serie A? Awful by Gasperini, finding the right position for Pasalic that literally runs in from second plan in every single Atalanta attack.

      2. CDK is not an AMC, you are so limited, like Pioli. I was just pointing out what Pioli’s ideas are, not saying he should have played there, as he shouldn’t.

  2. CDK’s previous success at Club Brugge was as a second striker.

Milan under Pioli do not play a two striker system, and I guess CDK didn’t have the skill set to succeed as a wing forward or as a withdrawn 9 or as a CAM, which were the spots that were available for him under Pioli’s limited sets of formations.

Clearly, there was a lack of communication between Maldini and Pioli when CDK was signed. It’s not a great idea to spend that much money on buying a very shiny square for a board with only round holes.

So, Maldini isn’t here anymore either.

Pioli pretty much got the players HE wanted in this transfer window. CDK just didn’t have the skill set needed to fit in with his system.

Atalanta do play a two striker system.

    1. Even if you give him the benefit of being a SS he still didn‘t play in completely alien positions, he didn‘t play CB or something like that.

That might be an excuse for some decrease in effectiveness, but no excuse for 0 goals and otherwise really low output. I mean not being a completely niche player is also an important quality. Atalanta drives on working with niche players but that only gets you so far as a club.

      1. yeah it’s ok if in your first season at a top club out of position, you scored and assist a few goals but 1 goal contribution is 40 games is terrible

  3. Low risk imo.
If he does good, we will collect fund. Or he’ll be back if he wants to
If he doesn’t, we will either play him or loan him again

  4. Here comes the crazy overreactions to one game…
Happy for the kid, and happy that he is not at Milan. It was never going to happen for him here.

  5. A month or so ago I watched the Youtube video that included every goal Milan scored in the 2022-2023 season, and it was pretty surprising how many of the goals in the first half of the video included very solid play by CDK. He really did have a fine start, and clearly is a good player, the whole “no goals or assists” thing just became an anvil hung around his neck and Pioli wasn’t able to guide him through it. In the end, I don’t think it was going to happen for him here, under these circumstances, but it’s not like he was ever as bad as people made him out to be.
