CM: ‘A constant concern’ – the data behind Bennacer’s recurring injuries

Ismael Bennacer has had a difficult few seasons, and this summer was an extension of this with him being shown the door at AC Milan. Whilst no move came to fruition, he will not feature for the Rossoneri for some time due to injury.

The last three words of that paragraph have been written all too much when it comes to Bennacer, and Milan are hurting because of it.

As Calciomercato.com write, it will take at least six weeks for the midfielder to recover from his latest injury – a calf muscle problem picked up during training – and perhaps, it could be even longer with tests yet to be conducted by Milan’s medical staff.

Since December 2020, the Algerian has missed over 400 days due to injuries – of course, the major one being the knee injury suffered in the Champions League against Inter which sidelined him for almost a year.

In that time, he has missed 65 matches for several different reasons. Twice, he has had hamstring problems, ankle and abductor issues once each, and he has had two operations, one on his foot, and the other for his aforementioned hamstring injury.

When Paulo Fonseca arrived, he was sidelined metaphorically, and that relationship now must be mended. Unfortunately for Bennacer, Fonseca, and Milan generally, that relationship must now be mended from the sidelines, literally.

  1. Bennacer is no dead horse, he came from a difficult period and he needs time to recover mentally…Bennacer have proven himself more than Fofana , Musa, Reinjders and co …at least in the Milan shirt !!! Bennacer have all the qualities to be a good DM, hes got vision, good passing, a mobile player, a fighter on the field , he only lacks weight.. but he compensate for it ,with his good ball technique… He is quite good , taking freekicks as well

      1. I think the analysis is spot on Vik.

I was happy to see him go because he came back from his injury clearly overweight.

Why question his on-field ability like that?

    1. Look I do like Bennacer (at least the 2020 version) as much as the next person, but he’s clearly becoming an injury prone player. This is not the first time he gets injured and is going to miss a lot of games and probably won’t be the last.
A player is as useful as he is available, and Bennacer isn’t available that much and probably won’t be anymore.

      1. I love Isma but he is by now very injury-prone; has missed 403 days from 17 injuries and also misses lots of days for the AFCON. At this time it is not effective for Milan to have him, but nobody will want to buy him from us due to his injury record.

    2. I’ve never seen Bennacer take a good free kick and haven’t seen him play a good game in two years. I want him to be successful but at a certain point he’s just filling space and collecting a pay check. I won’t label him a fraud like Origi but he’s not the player you say he is.

  2. While I agree that Ismaël’s injuries are a concern, people need to quit treating footballers as commodities. Yes, they make enough money to take care of their family for a couple generations. However, Ismaël keeps performing decently or great when he is healthy. I would be questioning Milan’s coaching staff and the MilanLab physicians.
