CM: Donnarumma now Milan’s strongest pillar – Maldini will have to show skill in renewal talks

Gianluigi Donnarumma is virtually the first name on the AC Milan team sheet at present, but the club will have to be skilled in negotiating his renewal.

It was five years to the day yesterday that Donnarumma made his debut for Milan as a 16-year-old at San Siro against Sassuolo as the Rossoneri ran out 2-1 winners, but since then Gigio has become a symbol of Milan and a starter in the Italian national team as well as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

As Calciomercato.com notes, Donnarumma has 211 appearances with the Rossoneri shirt and is now a veteran, even having worn the captain’s arm band on numerous occasions.

Head coach Stefano Pioli claimed during his pre-match press conference yesterday that he is not worried about the situation regarding Donnarumma’s contract, which expires in June 2021.

However, the future of the 21-year-old remains in the balance given the pressure of the time frame that the club are working under and the fact his agent is Mino Raiola.

The report adds how Paolo Maldini will have to be skilled in the negotiations, but he knows he cannot let such a prized asset leave for free.
