CM: Matteo Gabbia set for first senior Azzurri call up – the details

Matteo Gabbia has been significant for AC Milan in 2024, and it seems like he will be rewarded by Luciano Spalletti with his first senior call-up to the Italian National Team.

With Milan struggling with injuries in defence, few people would expect the short-term, and maybe even long-term solution to be Gabbia. However, this is what has played out. Since returning from Villarreal in January, the central defender has gone from strength to strength.

At the start of the year, reports suggested that he was a key player, but not one to steal the limelight, and this has been the story for the majority of the last few months. Gabbia did his job – very well at that – and has gone from a saviour in the defensive crisis to a starter since Paulo Fonseca’s arrival.

Of course, we now know him as one to steal the limelight, and the images of his Derby della Madonnina winner will continue to replay in the heads of fans for years to come.

His consistent performances in Milan’s defence are set to earn him his first senior call-up to the Azzurri too, with Calciomercato.com reporting that Spalletti will call him up for the Nations League fixtures against Belgium and Israel.

With talks of a new contract growing too, Gabbia is reaping the rewards at present.

  1. Congratulations to him and a well deserved callup, it’s been a long time coming.
Guess who’s not getting a call up despite perceived to be the building block of the defense!!( Tomori) . Dude needs to sit on the bench and reflect, he has declined over last year and is in a euphoria state of been the best.
