CM: Injury issues give Musah and Pobega a chance to shine in Dortmund

By Oliver Fisher -

Stefano Pioli is used to navigating injury problems by now, and against Borussia Dortmund tomorrow night he will have to make do with four midfielders for three spots.

As Calciomercato.com report, Ruben Loftus-Cheek has joined Rade Krunic and Ismael Bennacer in the treatment room after his groin issue against Lazio, leaving Tijjani Reijnders, Tommaso Pobega, Yacine Adli and Yunus Musah to choose from.

Against Dortmund there will have to be a reconfiguration of sorts, mainly because Pioli is not expected to field Adli at the base of the three as he did against Cagliari and Lazio. Instead, he should start on the bench.

One of either Musah or Reijnders will therefore be in front of the back four and the characteristics of the two players indicate that the American is the most likely choice.

Adli’s wait for a first Champions League start will, barring any surprises, be postponed. There will of course be the chance for him to come off the bench, but Pioli will go with a trio – including Pobega – that has physicality and intensity.

      1. I think the logic is, Pobega can defend better than Adli

Pioli is thinking not losing in his mindset since we are playing in dortmund

      2. Adli had like 3 fouls in the first 15 minutes of the game and 100% should’ve been on a yellow by then. One of the tackles in particular was very clumsy and could’ve easily ended in a worse way.

It was a good game for him to get thru and gain confidence, but people suggesting that it’s a no brained he should start at Dortmund are thinking with their heart and not their head. In a game where we are likely to have to weather the storm early, he would be a massive risk. Massive.

        1. I’m not sure where people see Pobega as this defensive stalwart. His passing is below par and he often barrels into opposing players.

Also, we’re going to sacrifice Reijnders attacking ability to play him as regista.

It feels like we’re playing scared. How about we impose our will and try to bury Dortmund at home and make a statement. We need 3 points.

    1. Here we go again ahahahaha. You obviously did not watch the last game. Well and I think Pioli understands that better than those amazing Milan fans who hates our own home grown Italian players. Just amazing

  1. I’m not sure what Piloi is trying to cook up here, but I’d stick with the lineup against Lazio and bring Pobega in at 60mns for physicality. There’s absolutely no reason for him to start. Reijnders and Musah are very useful pushing up front, so might as well start Adli in the middle, not pobega.
